Catawba College (“Catawba”) seeks applicants for its Area Coordinator for Housing and Residence Life position. The Area Coordinator is pivotal in fostering a vibrant and supportive residential community at Catawba College. This live-in position oversees the day-to-day operations of assigned residential areas, providing leadership in student development, crisis management, and community building. The coordinator supervises a team of Resident Assistants (RAs) and collaborates closely with campus partners to enhance the overall student experience within the residential community.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Directly supervise and facilitate Catawba Resident Assistant's recruitment, training, and development.
  • Consistent with the Catawba Mission and Student Affairs priorities, create and implement a team development plan that includes, but is not limited to, individual meetings, weekly staff meetings, and team bonding activities.
  • Supervise, train, and mentor Resident Assistants (RAs) to ensure adequate support and programming within assigned residential areas.
  • Develop and implement community-building initiatives and residence hall programs that promote student engagement, inclusivity, and personal growth.
  • Serve as a conduct officer, adjudicating student conduct cases and maintaining accurate documentation by college policies.
  • Coordinate residence hall openings and closings, including room inspections, key distribution, and related administrative tasks.
  • Respond to after-hours emergencies and serve in an on-call rotation to support students and enforce policies.
  • Collaborate with Facilities Management for maintenance and custodial needs within residential facilities.
  • Assist with selecting, training, and evaluating RAs and other residence life staff members.
  • Participate in departmental and campus-wide committees and initiatives as assigned.
  • Participate in on-call rotation with other Residence Life and Housing staff; work cooperatively with Academic Affairs, Chaplain Office, Catawba Public Safety, Student Health Services, Catawba counselors, and other campus and community resources to assist in emergencies and crises.
  • Contribute to an effective unit by completing special projects and performing other duties assigned by the Dean of Students.
  • On Call & Crisis Management
  • Serve in on-call crisis management rotation for the campus.
  • Provide emergency response and crisis management as needed on campus and for staff.
  • Develop a residence hall on-call program with the Resident Assistants to ensure 24-hour, seven-day coverage in the residence halls
  • Other Duties as Assigned by the President and/or the Executive Vice President and Provost or Dean of Students

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Ability to build solid and healthy relationships with students, creating a collaborative environment with students at the center. 
  • Demonstrated problem-solving ability with high student/customer service in addressing student/family issues or concerns.
  • A collaborative individual working with faculty and staff from various Catawba departments, capable of resolving escalated issues arising from operations and requiring coordination with facilities, the conference center, and other departments.
  • Ability to multitask and find creative solutions in a supervisory and autonomous environment.
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills.
  • Computer skills, including Microsoft Office programs and learning management systems like Blackboard. 
  • Understanding student management systems such as Banner, Presence, eRezLife, and Maxient.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills are needed to work effectively with faculty, staff, students, parents, and administrators.
  • Excellent leadership and supervisory skills
  • Familiarity with social media platforms such as Instagram.
  • Demonstrate tact, a positive attitude, courtesy, and discretion in dealing with trustees, faculty, staff, students, high-level Catawba officials, and the public.
  • Work independently and function effectively in a team and within diverse groups.
  • Adaptability, flexibility, and a willingness to work in a changing environment
  • Ability to work occasional evening and weekend hours.
  • This position demands accuracy, honesty, integrity, and the ability to work within the Catawba Mission. 

JOB REQUIREMENTS: The minimum job requirements for this position are:

  • Master’s degree in higher education, student personnel, or related field
  • At least five (3) years of experience working in residence life on a college or university campus, with a preference for experience at the director level.
  • Experience developing, implementing, and assessing strategic goals, objectives, and outcomes.
  • Experience in supervision/administrative role.

ABOUT CATAWBA:

Founded in 1851 in Newton, North Carolina, Catawba was started by German pioneers who had traveled from eastern Pennsylvania to settle in the Haw, Yadkin, and Catawba Rivers valleys. In 1890, Catawba became a coeducational institution, and the first woman to graduate completed her studies in 1893. In 1925, Catawba moved and re-opened to its current location in Salisbury, NC, about 45 minutes from Greensboro, Winston-Salem, and Charlotte, two hours from the mountains, and four hours from the beaches. 

Today, Catawba College has 41 buildings on 276 wooded acres on a residential campus. It is known for its 189-acre on-campus ecological preserve. Ranked as one of the best colleges in the South, Catawba offers 70 academic majors to approximately 1,300 students representing 34 U.S. states and 19 foreign countries. Students are instructed by 80 full-time faculty, more than 83% of whom hold the highest degree in their field.
