Department/College Description
About the School of Performing Arts: As part of a recent RIT Presidential initiative, the School of Performing Arts was established in the of summer 2022. It is a cross-institute effort, unprecedented at any other institute of technology, to build an inclusive, representative, cutting edge and robust performing arts ecosystem on campus.
Recognizing that the performing arts cultivate skills that are intrinsic to a creative and successful life and career, the resoundingly successful Performing Arts Scholarship (PAS) program gives students who have a background in the performing arts the opportunity to remain actively engaged in their art, regardless of their degree program. These students are not only talented, engaged, and well-rounded individuals, but also goal-oriented, academic high-achievers, self-starters, and team players. Prospective scholars submit audition videos which are reviewed by faculty. Strong enthusiasm from incoming students has expanded enrollment well past the University’s projected benchmarks, growing from 126 scholars in year one to 556 in year six. By the Fall of 2024 there will be more than 2000 scholarship recipients pursuing degrees in all nine RIT colleges. Benefits of the program to students include a four-year renewable scholarship, faculty mentors with expertise in performing arts disciplines, and numerous enrichment opportunities.
RIT offers minors and immersions in music, theatre, theatre technology and dance, and many students fulfill their general education and elective requirements with performing arts courses. In addition to a number of musical ensembles, including the RIT Philharmonic Orchestra, RIT Singers, three RIT Jazz Ensembles, and two RIT Concert Bands, students perform in multiple theatrical and dance productions every semester. The ecosystem also includes over forty performing arts student clubs including Game Symphony Orchestra, Pep Band, A Capella, RIT Players, WADAIKO, Vis Viva Dance Company and many others.
