POSITION SUMMARY:

The Carl G. Grefenstette Center for Ethics in Science, Technology, and Law seeks a one-year postdoctoral fellow to join a community of researchers at the intersection of critical technology studies, critical AI studies, community technology, ethics, Christian theology, Catholic Social Teaching, and religious ethics more generally.

Funded by a grant from the Hillman Foundation, this postdoctoral fellow will work on a substantial research project, as well as participate in the teaching life of the center. The role will involve co-teaching 1 class each semester plus teaching a solo class in Spring 2027, research (solo and working with ED and student research assistants), participating in Center events and programs, leading a colloquium on campus, assisting in the successful implementation of Center’s mission and vision.

We welcome proposals from scholars working on substantial research projects related to subject above. Applicants from all academic disciplines are encouraged to apply, including—but not limited to— Catholic theology, Christian theology, computer science, history and philosophy of science, philosophy, religious studies, science and technology studies, sociology. The program is open to U.S. and international postdoctoral researchers.

Postdoctoral fellow receive $65,000 each year in salary, $1,000 each year in dedicated research funds, $1,000 each year in conference travel funds, and Duquesne University eligible benefits.

This is a one-year position with a possibility of renewal.

This is a hybrid position, with regular on-campus work required.

Minimum qualifications:

  • Doctoral degree in Catholic theology, Christian theology, computer science, history and philosophy of science, philosophy, religious studies, science and technology studies, sociology, or related field from an accredited educational institution.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the University Community.
  • Ability and willingness to contribute actively to the mission of the University and to respect the Spiritan Catholic identity of Duquesne University.   • Be no more than 2 single-spaced pages (not including references)
  • Describe in general terms your planned research work, how it fits within the field, and its potential impact
  • Include a possible course or courses to teach
  • Include a public engagement aspect of your research
