"Teaching Professor (WOT) in Comparative Medicine, Head of Global Conservation, Education and Outreach program"

The University of Washington Department of Comparative Medicine (DCM) and the Washington National Primate Research Center (WaNPRC) invite applications for a Teaching Professor without Tenure position leading the Global Conservation, Education and Outreach (GCEO) program.

The GCEO is a world-renowned initiative dedicated to international primate conservation, education, and biomedical collaboration. The successful candidate will be appointed at the rank of Teaching Professor without Tenure, commensurate with experience, and will hold a faculty appointment in the Department of Comparative Medicine.

This position will lead a globally impactful program with active collaborations in Indonesia, Nepal, China, Bangladesh, Thailand, Mexico, India, and Laos. Supported by NIH P51 and U42 funding, the GCEO program advances four major objectives aligned with the NIH National Primate Research Centers' goals:

• Resource Support: Develop international breeding programs and expand access to nonhuman primate (NHP) resources at local, national, and global levels.
• Research: Foster collaborative field and laboratory-based research on the biology, conservation, and global health relevance of wild NHP populations.
• Training: Provide hands-on training and educational opportunities in primatology, conservation biology, and global health for students, staff, and faculty from partner institutions.
• Outreach: Engage and educate the public on the importance of NHP conservation and the vital role of primates in biomedical research.
• Teaching: All University of Washington faculty engage in teaching and service.

This role will be deeply integrated into the educational mission of the department, participating in the Comparative Medicine residency program, the MS program, and veterinary student clerkships. The successful candidate will be expected to establish a vibrant and sustainable global outreach, training, and conservation education program with strong intramural and extramural funding.

Key responsibilities include:

• Leading a high-impact, collaborative GCEO program that enhances the research and educational missions of DCM and WaNPRC.
• Actively mentoring and teaching trainees across disciplines.
• Building interdisciplinary connections within UW and affiliated institutions.
• Initiating and developing new research, training and outreach education programs within the unit’s broad focus on primatology, conservation biology and global health.
• Engaging with and enhancing a diverse international network of collaborators.
• Demonstrating excellence in professionalism, communication, and regulatory understanding, especially regarding the ethical use of animals in research.
• Applying for and securing independent extramural research funding (e.g., NIH, private foundations).
• Present unit-related research and activities at scientific meetings.
• Assist with arrangements for visiting scholars/delegations hosted by the unit/center.

Knowledge, skills, ability required to perform the job:

• Must have a Ph.D or equivalent terminal degree.
• Must have at least four years of experience involving international scientific collaboration (i.e., in-country research and training programs, with evidence of lecturing at the university level).
• Experience in or an understanding of and commitment to the nonhuman primate research model in scientifically and ethically justified research.
• Be familiar with and committed to the primate research center mission to serve as a national resource.
• Must be willing to travel internationally three to six months per year.

Knowledge, and desired skills:

• Experience collaborating with partner institutions in primate-habitat countries, especially countries in South/Southeast Asia.
• Experience with field-based research (population surveys, genetic analysis, zoonotic risk, etc.).
• Experience conducting field-training programs (field courses) for in-country university students/professionals as well as study abroad programs for home-country students.
• Experience conducting outreach education programs (K-12) both nationally and abroad.
• Solid record of scientific publication.
• Evidence of successful grant awards.
• Outstanding interpersonal communication skills, creativity, energy, and flexibility.
• Strong personal and professional ethics, maturity, and judgment.
• Clear awareness and appreciation of the value of diversity and cultural differences, both locally and globally.

WaNPRC is one of only seven NIH-supported National Primate Research Centers in the U.S., and has been a leader in translational and preclinical research since its founding in 1959. The DCM offers a collegial and collaborative environment with access to numerous core facilities, and partners across UW and regional research institutions. Generous start-up resources and dedicated lab space will be provided to support the success of this position.

Professor WOT in Comparative Medicine, Head of Global Conservation, Education and Outreach program hold indefinite faculty appointment offers a competitive salary range of $160,008 - $168,000 annually or $13,334 - $14,000 per month, depending on qualifications and experience. The anticipated start date is September 1, 2025, though this is flexible. The position will remain open until filled.

This Teaching Professor position is eligible for multi-year appointments that align with a 12-month service period (July 1-June 30). The department will fill one position under this recruitment. This is a full-time, 100% FTE, position.

Candidates must have a PhD in psychology, primatology, or a related field (or foreign equivalent). A strong record of peer-reviewed research involving field studies or conservation of nonhuman primates. A national or international reputation for excellence in research and outreach. Experience managing complex, multinational collaborations or multi-PI projects. Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. Interest in expanding local and international conservation and education efforts.
