Technician B

Position Summary

The Synthetic Regeneration and Systems Physiology Laboratory at Columbia University exists to uncover new scientific knowledge in biomedicine and to train bright talent in the art of science. We are motivated by one question: How do heterogenous cells synchronize their activity to restore damaged tissue? Our research thus aims to define the molecular and biophysical drivers of tissue healing at organ scale and to leverage this knowledge for better therapeutic strategies for patients.

What We’re Looking For

The laboratory is seeking a motivated mouse Research Technician B to work in mouse immunogenomics of wound healing. The Mouse Immunotherapy Research Technician B will support research studying the role of various T cells in mouse wound healing and regeneration.

Laboratory experience in immunology-related techniques is strongly preferred. This enriching research assistantship offers a balance of structured learning and professional development which fosters an environment to advance individual career success.

We have developed several innovative, unpublished platforms to understand tissue regeneration at organ scale. The candidate will work in close collaboration with the Columbia Stem Cell Initiative, the Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center, the Columbia Genome Center, and the Broad Institute of Harvard and MIT. Results of the research will be published in one or more scientific publications targeting high impact peer-reviewed journals.

Responsibilities

  • Candidate will predominantly have technical responsibilities for establishing and maintaining mouse colonies.
  • Conducting survival surgery procedures in mice.
  • Utilizing flow cytometry to characterize immune cell repertoire in mice.
  • Computerized record-keeping of mouse procedures and census.
  • Participating in the development and investigation of existing and new procedures and assays.
  • Participating in preparing data from our studies for presentation and publication.
  • Helping in the bench-related part of the experiments such as PCR, molecular cloning, and cell culture.
  • Proactively seek out new information in the literature and incorporate this into individual project(s) as well as the overall program.
  • Resolve research hurdles by communicating effectively with PI and team members.
  • Collaborate with functional and technical experts to facilitate scientific achievement.
  • Maintain a high level of productivity in the laboratory setting.
  • Demonstrate a high degree of responsibility in maintaining scientific standards, and safe laboratory practices for self and reporting staff.
  • Effectively write and communicate research materials.
  • Perform other related duties and responsibilities as assigned/requested.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in chemistry, biology or physics or a completed animal husbandry program or equivalent in education, training and experience.
  • Knowledge of various related laboratory procedures and techniques preferred. One year of related experience preferred.
  • Candidate should preferable be knowledgeable or experienced in handling rodents.
  • Capable of working in teams to design and execute experiments, interpret data, and identify appropriate follow-up strategies.
  • Excellent project management skills. Ability to multitask and work within timelines.
  • Inclusive mindset to thrive in a diverse cultural city and work environment.
