Tenure Track Associate Professor - Advanced Manufacturing + AI

The Department of Integrated Systems Engineering and the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at The Ohio State University invite applications for a joint Tenure Track Associate Professor appointment in the area of Advanced Manufacturing and Artificial Intelligence. The research area must complement the current research portfolios. This position will start as early as Fall 2026.

Position Overview

Research and Development Responsibilities: The successful candidate is expected to obtain funding and perform research related to advanced manufacturing, materials and forming processes, damage and failure analysis, process simulation, dynamic behavior of materials, and mathematical modeling of manufacturing processes. Deep understanding in process design, understanding of quality and standards, and digital twinning is beneficial. The development and application of machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI) tools to optimize/automate manufacturing processes is a crucial part of this position's responsibilities. Experience in commercial manufacturing in particular automotive related research is highly desirable. The successful candidate is expected to hold a joint appointment in the Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) Department, and work closely with the director of the HAMMER (Hybrid Autonomous Manufacturing, Moving from Evolution to Revolution) Engineering Research Center.

It is expected that the individual will publish scholarly papers in peer-reviewed journals, and will provide significant national/international service. A Ph.D. in engineering is required.

Teaching Responsibilities: The successful candidate will have teaching responsibilities in ISE and MSE to bring state of the art manufacturing insights to the classroom. Specifically, ISE 4510 (Manufacturing Engineering) a new course emphasizing quantitative analysis of manufacturing processes, discusses manufacturing support systems, evaluates interplay between materials and manufacturing, and discusses future manufacturing like automation and data-driven controls. ISE 4500 (Manufacturing Process Engineering) provides a quantitative understanding of contemporary manufacturing processes; exposure to laboratory exercises and computer simulations in major manufacturing processes; design for manufacturing and assembly. The candidate would be expected to develop an educational program combining the application of AI to improve and control manufacturing processes in automotive related industries. This may also have a distance or outreach component with industrial engagement and credentialing.
