Tenure-Track Faculty Position in Modern European History
The Department of History at the College of the Holy Cross invites applications for a full-time tenure-track Assistant Professor specializing in Modern European History to begin in August 2026. Given the department's current strengths in Russia and the United Kingdom, we welcome candidates whose research and teaching have, in particular, focused on other regions within Europe from the late 1800s onwards. In particular, we welcome specializations that may include (but are not limited to) the experience of World War; national and transnational identities; borderlands; immigration; reactionary and/or revolutionary social, political, and cultural movements (including fascism and Nazism); the construction of race and racial hatred; environmental conflict; post-1989 histories; and the politics of memory. Additionally, we welcome scholars whose methods may engage public history, oral histories, and/or the digital humanities. The successful candidate should be willing and able to offer introductory European history surveys from the early modern to the present (HIST 113/114) as well as contribute to our departmental methods curriculum. The successful candidate would also be encouraged to develop classes that align with their own teaching and research interests. There would also be opportunities to collaborate with colleagues in related interdisciplinary programs offered by our Center for Interdisciplinary Studies or multi-disciplinary majors like Environmental Studies and Critical Race and Ethnic Studies.
This position carries a 3-2 teaching load with a research leave prior to tenure review of either a full year at 80% salary or a semester at full salary, and generous sabbatical and fellowship leaves for tenured faculty. To enable a smooth transition to Holy Cross, new full-time tenure-track Assistant Professors receive start-up funding to support their research and professional development and have a one-course reduction in their first year of teaching (i.e., 2-2). This position offers full benefits and a starting salary in the range of $101,850 to $103,850. Faculty at the College cultivate a richly diverse academic community, pursue innovative teaching, and create high-impact scholarship.
Qualifications: Candidates must demonstrate excellence in scholarship and undergraduate teaching as well as a commitment to inclusive pedagogies. Ph.D. required by the beginning of the appointment.
