Job Summary/Basic Function:

This position will serve WSU Theatre in the School of Performing Arts as an Electrician for the theatre lighting area as well as Scene Shop Supervisor for the theatre scenic shop.

WSU Theatre produces four theatre productions per year. Electrician responsibilities will include serving as Master Electrician for two theatre productions per year and serving as Assistant Master Electrician on two additional theatre productions per year. Duties include reading lighting plots, preparing the space for the hang, training student electricians of all skill levels, supervising the lighting hang, focus, tech, and potentially serving as primary programmer for productions. This position will support and mentor advanced students as they take the lead on various aspects of the process. The position will also supervise lighting employees and theatre practicum students in executing designs and assist the lighting professor with creative problem-solving to meet the needs of each production.

Scene Shop Supervisor responsibilities will include reading and interpreting construction drawings, assigning student employees tasks to build scenic elements in a professional and safe manner, and teaching theatre practicum students basic construction skills needed to complete class and production assignments. This person will also assist the Technical Director in maintaining shop equipment, inventory, and supplies; establishing and enforcing safety procedures during scenic construction and departmental productions; building scenery; and supervising and mentoring students in scenic and prop construction in the Theater Scene Shop. This position often requires work on evenings and weekends.

Required Qualifications:

  • Two years of experience in theatre, lighting, construction, shop management or related fields

  • BS, BA, or BFA Degree (Theater Technology Focus Preferred)
  • Experience in theatrical lighting and electrics or Experience in theatre scenery construction
  • Experience in an educational setting

Physical Requirements of this position: Medium work. Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Visual Acuity Requirements including color, depth perception and field of vision: Required to have visual acuity to perform activities such as: operating machines, (i.e. lathes, drill presses, power saws) where the job is at or within arms reach; skilled trades tasks of a non-repetitive nature, such as carpenter, plumber, mechanic.

The conditions the worker will be subject to in this position: The worker is subject to noise. There is sufficient noise to cause the worker to shout in order to be heard above ambient noise level., The worker is subject to vibration. Exposure to oscillating movements of the extremities or whole body. , The worker is subject to hazards. Includes a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current, working on scaffolding and high places, exposure to high heat or exposure to chemicals. , The worker is subject to atmospheric conditions. One or more of the following conditions that affect the respiratory system or the skin: fumes, odors, dust, mists, gases, or poor ventilation.
