Special Instructions To Applicants: Student status is required to be eligible for student positions. Must be enrolled in a minimum of six hours during a long semester. Maintain a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Limited to working up to 19 hours per week. Job Summary: Peer tutors will provide tutoring to small groups, who have requested a tutor for support in a specialized class as directed by the Director of Excelencia Center. This position assists students in improving academic achievement, supports students by reviewing and clarifying learning problems, and provides useful study skills to students that need supplemental help. Other assistance might include reviewing class material, discussing text, reviewing test questions, generating ideas for papers, or working on solutions to problems. The Peer Tutor will… 1. Attend all scheduled tutoring sessions and notify the Director of Excelencia Center and the Title V Tutor if a session must be cancelled 2. Provide the Director of Excelencia Center and the Title V Tutor with an up-to-date schedule of tutoring sessions 3. Prepare for tutoring sessions by reviewing any notes, handouts, and/or bookwork 4. Be punctual, begin all sessions promptly, use time for academic tasks, and focus on the student’s needs 5. Complete necessary personnel paperwork 6. Maintain absolute confidentiality with regard to academic progress and/or personal information concerning students 7. Recognize the different learning styles and student preferences 8. Participate in professional development activities to improve tutorial skills and continue to grow cultural competence and reflection skills 9. Make appropriate referrals to other campus and community resources as needed 10. Collect attendance data for every tutoring session, including student names, course title, date and time of session 11. Coordinate meetings and schedules with students’ as appropriate 12. Attend staff meetings 13. Make periodic announcements about the availability of the tutoring sessions to the students 14. Maintain regular working hours 15. Other duties as assigned by the Director
Minimum Qualifications: 1. A grade of B+ or above in the course(s) for which you wish to tutor 2. Recommended by the instructor who taught the course 3. Have and maintain an overall 3.0 GPA or higher (on a 4.0 scale) 4. Organized, efficient and flexible 5. Commitment to academic integrity 6. Be willing to attend trainings and regular meetings
Preferred Qualifications: Familiar with Microsoft Word and Excel. Excellent customer service skills a plus.
Salary: $13.00 per hour
Work Hours: Up to 19 hours per week
