Salary Range:
Level I
Up to $44,650 annualized, commensurate with education, experience, and qualifications.
Level II
Up to $46,330 annualized, commensurate with education, experience, and qualifications.

Job Summary
Level I
The Veteran Certifying Official I is responsible for the decision-making process that requires initiative and judgment related to certifications and exemptions that meet the needs of student veterans and military-affiliated students. This position provides professional knowledge and expertise in providing GI Bill Certifications and Hazlewood exemptions for student veterans and military-affiliated students.
Level II
The Veteran Certifying Official II is responsible for decision-making processes involved with preparation and adjustments of GI Bill Certifications and Hazlewood exemptions. This position ensures documents are scanned and imaged in support of GI Bill certification and Hazlewood exemptions. In addition, this position provides advance skills in the administration and oversight of GI Bill Certifications and Hazlewood exemptions.
Core Responsibilities
Level I
- Uses discretion and independent judgment to advise and counsel student veterans and to provide certification and exemption reviews as requested by student veterans and military-affiliated students.
- Processes, reviews, and evaluates student requests for GI Bill and Hazlewood exemptions.
- Image and index documents in support of GI Bill and Hazlewood exemptions and informs requests of additional documentation when required.
- Uses independent judgment in resolving complex required procedures to qualify student veterans requesting certification and reviews for Hazlewood exemptions.
- Interacts with VA Education administrators and Texas Veterans Commission officials on behalf of students making requests for educational benefits and exemptions of tuition and fees.
- Assists with gathering information and providing reports to appropriate levels of administration.
- Interacts with Center for Military Affiliated Students (CMAS) personnel on certifications and exemptions.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Level II
- May supervise Veteran Certifying Official I (VCO1) and work-study students. This includes participating in hiring of work-study students and determining work priorities and assigning work to other certifying officials.
- Serves as primary liaison with other university administrators, student veterans and other certifying officials regarding GI Bill certifications and the determination of Hazlewood exemptions.
- Uses discretion and independent judgement to advise student veterans concerning their certifications for educational benefits and exemptions.
- Provides oversight and guidance to other staff members for processing certifications and exemption requests and supporting documents necessary to determine eligibility for benefits.
- Works with academic advisors and fiscal affairs staff in support of course selections consistent with degree plans and payment of benefits.
- Uses independent judgement to orchestrate and provide oversight from forms intake through certification and funds reconciliation.
- Participates in the review and revising of certification process and procedures.
- Works with the Center for Military Affiliated Students (CMAS) personnel on certifications and exemptions.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
Both levels
- High School Diploma
- This position requires the ability to maintain the security and integrity of UT San Antonio and its infrastructure.
Level I
- Three (3) years of related work experience.
Level II
- Five (5) years of related work experience.

Working Conditions
Office environment. Ability to travel to and from meetings, training sessions, or other business-related events. Workdays, areas, and work hours may vary based on the needs of the department.
Physical Demands
Sedentary work; sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required, only occasionally. Exerts up to 10 lbs. of force occasionally.
This position will work primarily on campus. Travel and parking expenses are the employee's responsibility.
This position is contingent upon a successful background check. Verification of a valid driver's license and Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) may be completed as applicable. Applicants selected must be able to show proof of eligibility to work in the United States by time of hire.
