What You'll Do
This position qualifies for a $2,000 sign on bonus following successful completion of 6 months of employment for newly hired employees.
The Small Animal Dermatology technician provides exceptional level customer service and clinical care for patients and their families seeking referral Dermatology care. This position requires the ability to multitask and excellent prioritization of cases to manage a varying caseload. The Dermatology technician has exceptional communication skills to be able to teach students, interns, residents and other fellow technicians in dermatology care. Under the direct guidance of a senior veterinary technician or veterinarian, the Diagnostic Imaging Technician I is responsible for providing high quality nursing care and performing basic technical skills and procedures on a variety of patients.
Essential functions as a Dermatology Veterinary Technician will be:
- Patient Care - Provide high quality patient care including the following:
- Provide high quality patient care in a timely manner as ordered by clinicians.
- Collaborate with colleagues, co-workers, faculty, house officers and students to effectively manage a high-volume clinical workflow without direct supervisory oversight.
- Provide care to patients and support to co-workers and students that are consistent with hospital standards of minimizing fear, anxiety, stress and pain in our patients.
- Work with clinicians to perform specialty examinations.
- Ensure all patient safety and departmental protocols are being followed.
- Actively seek opportunities to provide support and coverage to all modalities
- Collaborate with administrative and clinical care team members throughout the hospital to coordinate and prioritize patient care.
- Routinely perform technical tasks with supervision once trained.
- Client Communication:
- Communicate with clients regarding test results, patient questions and appointment scheduling.
- Manage prescription refill requests.
- Admit patients for hospitalization, testing and procedures.
- Discharge patients reviewing home care instructions and answer client questions.
- Referring veterinarian and client communication as directed
- Review financial estimates with clients
- Teaching – Teaching responsibilities include:
- Contribute to the teaching and instruction of veterinary and technician students in Dermatology topics.
- Clinical instruction of basic procedures for veterinary students, interns, residents and student technicians throughout diagnostic imaging rotation.
- Engage students to ensure they are receiving a successful and fulfilling education in the department
- Miscellaneous - Perform other duties as assigned by Supervisor including:
- Cleaning and stocking of supplies and equipment in all areas of dermatology.
- Maintain adequate inventory of medical supplies and pharmaceuticals.
- Ensure all treatment areas are maintained in good condition, submit requests for improvements or work orders as needed or scheduling service.
- Provide coverage for other sections of the department or Hospital as needed.
- Participate in Departmental and Hospital-wide initiatives as required.
- Complete at least 6 hours of RACE approved CE annually.
- Maintain IACUC and RECOVER certifications as needed.
- Research
- Assist faculty and house officers with ongoing research projects.
What We're Looking For
Basic Requirements:
- High school diploma (or equivalent), and 2 years of experience as a veterinary assistant or veterinary technician, or similar technical experience.
- High emotional intelligence and team player
- Engaged learner; Highly motivated to improve your knowledge base and skill set.
- Understanding of medical terminology, veterinary pharmacology, and common diagnostic procedures
- Willingness to coach and train students
- Ability to effectively work as a member of a diverse team
- Required technical skills include:
- Safely restrain all species treated in the hospital using fear free techniques
- Assess the attitude and responsiveness of patients being treated
- Obtain vital signs, including temperature, pulse, respiration, and capillary refill time
- Phlebotomy and catheter placement
- Ability to administer oral, subcutaneous, intramuscular, and intravenous medications
- Ability to prioritize multiple responsibilities for several patients within a busy clinical setting.
- Ability to effectively work as a member of a diverse team of clinical and administrative professionals.
- • Basic computer skills including the ability to learn the electronic medical record system.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. with or without accommodation.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution in Veterinary Technology or other animal biology related field plus two years related work experience.
- Certified Veterinary Technician eligible
- Experience in a specialty or academic hospital setting
Pay Range
Minimum $22.50, Midpoint $26.80, Maximum $31.10
Salary is based on related experience, expertise, and internal equity; generally, new hires can expect pay between the minimum and midpoint of the range.
