Job Summary

The Web Application Developer position will be involved in and assist with the design, implementation, integration, and continuous support of high-value technology projects to support the college's medical education mission. This position will learn and improve the college's internal systems and external interfaces that support automated integration. Additionally, this role will involve continuous assessment of technology and existing applications to meet the evolving needs of the college.

Duties and Responsibilities

Application and Web Development:

  • Manage the complete software development process from design to implementation of web-based solutions with the Carle Illinois Technology Team.
  • Develop, implement and maintain solutions to integrate campus and vendor systems to export, import, and translate data in an automated manner for administrative and academic purposes.
  • Write clean, functional code on the front-end and back-end with extensive testing.
  • Complete work within agreed upon timeframes.
  • Gather requirements, analyze business processes or communications goals, and work with team to streamline such processes or achieve stated goals.

System Support and Maintenance:

  • Provide high-level system support, troubleshooting, maintenance, and fixes for existing technology solutions, including taking ownership of troubleshooting and enhancing functionality, in consultation with colleagues and service users.
  • Document, maintain, and upgrade software solutions after deployment.
  • Regularly assess and improve the effectiveness of college technology applications regularly.

Collaboration and Continuous Learning:

  • Work with cross-functional teams to understand and address business processes and technological needs.
  • Work with IT management to implement strategic improvements.
  • Research new technologies and best practices in the field that could potentially improve and enhance our applications.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Support the educational mission of the college, maintaining appropriate confidentiality of information and materials, in accordance with related student and patient regulations, such as FERPA and HIPAA.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships; work cooperatively and collegially with others in a manner consistent with a workplace of dignity and respect; support and engage in equal employment opportunity principles, rules, and regulations.
  • Contribute to a culture of diversity and inclusion within the college community.
  • Champion positive inter-professional relationships bridging the college's private/public organization and missions.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • (2) years of work experience in IT-related functions such as hardware/software support, programming, network design, network engineering, IT systems integration, or closely related field. College coursework which includes Information Technology (IT), IT Management, Programming, IT systems, or a closely related discipline may be substituted as follows:
    • 30 semester hours equals one (1) year (12 months)
    • Associate's degree (60 semester hours) equals eighteen months (18 months)
    • 90 semester hours equals two (2) years (24 months)
    • Bachelor's Degree (120 semester hours) equals three (3) years (36 months)
  • Demonstrated experience with web development using languages such as PHP, Apache, MySQL/MariaDB, or other languages and OS environments.
  • Experience developing front-end web interfaces using HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and web protocols (HTTP, SOAP, REST, etc.)
  • Demonstrated experience with SQL queries.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in an academic and/or medical education environment and understanding of the unique needs of educational institutions.
  • Experience with full-stack LAMP development for web-based solutions.
  • Experience with LMS and/or CRM systems.
  • Experience in environments requiring rapid learning and adaptation.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with gathering requirements and generating technical specifications.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with creating system and user documentation for applications and sites.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to problem-solve and address complex issues.
  • Demonstrated passion for continuous learning and self-improvement with ability to quickly adapt to new technologies and methodologies.
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills, with a focus on teamwork and collaboration skills that incorporate tact and diplomacy.
  • Ability to work efficiently and effectively independently and in a team.
  • Project management skills, with the ability to work cooperatively with all constituencies in a unique environment of engineering-based medical education in the context of the Carle and Illinois private/public relationship.
  • Willingness to learn all aspects of the college's operational and strategic objectives.
  • Demonstrated success in collaborative projects and effective communication.
  • Familiarity with IT best practices and processes in software development, service design, information security, and change management.
  • Knowledge of student and patient privacy regulations (FERPA, HIPAA, etc.).

Appointment Information

This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 5031 - Information Technology Technical Associate position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the search closes. Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience, while also considering internal equity. The budgeted salary range for the position is $65,000 to $80,000. Sponsorship for work authorization is not available for this position.
