Wheelchair Tennis Head Coach
Join the 2026 National Championship winning University of Michigan Wheelchair Tennis Team as our new Head Coach! Prior wheelchair tennis experience not required.
Position Summary:
The Wheelchair Tennis Head Coach will provide leadership and oversight for the wheelchair tennis program. Develop and implement strategy, structure, and programs related to the wheelchair tennis program. Analyze, compare, review, and evaluate program activities and outcomes. You will lead all coaching and athlete development for the wheelchair tennis program. Represent the program with internal and external partners, including serving on assigned committees to represent the department, and providing support to the department's community-based programming and programs. You will manage the budget allocated towards the wheelchair tennis program. You will be responsible for staff, student, and student-athlete development within the wheelchair tennis program. You will provide a strategic approach for the wheelchair tennis program and its operations. You will provide management of the wheelchair tennis program by creating the budget, policies, procedures, and operations.
You will be onsite in Ann Arbor. Monday - Friday 8 am - 5 pm; Expected to work early morning, evening hours, and weekends and on-call responsibilities. You will report to the Assistant Director, Adaptive Sports & Fitness. You can find a complete job description here.
- Lead all wheelchair tennis practices and competitions across varsity and recreational levels.
- Design and implement individualized and team-based athlete development plans using performance analysis and best practices.
- Oversee athletes progress through regular evaluations, goal-setting, and collaboration with medical and performance staff.
- Manage all program operations including equipment, facilities, logistics, and competition planning (home and away).
- Develop strategic plans to grow the wheelchair tennis program with Adaptive Sports & Fitness goals.
- Develop partnerships with internal departments, external organizations, and governing bodies.
- Lead recruitment efforts to attract and retain student-athletes through outreach and community engagement.
- Plan and deliver educational programming, workshops, and community initiatives to promote adaptive sports awareness.
- Manage program budget, procurement, and inventory in compliance with institutional policies.
- Supervise, mentor, and develop staff, interns, volunteers, and student-athletes within the program.
Other Expectations: Evening and weekend work responsibilities; be on-call to provide leadership during times programs and facilities are operating; attend professional development opportunities, as assigned.
- A Bachelor's degree in Recreation, Kinesiology, Sports Management, Professional Tennis Management, or a related field; an equivalent combination of experience and education is also acceptable.
- At least 2 years of experience in coaching tennis or wheelchair tennis, or 4 years of competitive playing experience in wheelchair tennis, and experience with sports programming (prior wheelchair tennis experience is not required to apply to this position)
- Current certifications in CPR, First Aid, and AED, or ability to obtain within six months of hire.
- Attain required certifications by the USTA and/or ITF to serve as a wheelchair tennis coach within six months of hire.
