Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit: The College of Humanities, Social Sciences, and the Arts (CHSSA) is home to 14 academic departments and offers a wide variety of undergraduate and graduate degree programs including the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Music, Master of Arts, Master of Fine Arts, and Master of Public Administration as well as combined bachelor's/master's degree programs in Spanish and English. The CHSSA also houses the Gender Studies and Research Center and the Academic Resource Center, which offers full-service, professional advising for all CHSSA undergraduate students. In addition, the CHSSA offers a full complement of interdisciplinary minors and post baccalaureate certificates including: Africana studies, American studies, Asian studies, classical studies, conflict management and resolution, emergency and disaster management, forensic science, Hispanic studies, journalism, Latin American studies, medical humanities, Middle East and Islamic studies, Native American studies, professional writing and publishing, science and medical writing, and women's, gender, and sexuality studies. The CHSSA contributes significantly to the curriculum that comprises UNCW's University Studies Program, through which all undergraduates gain a foundation in the liberal arts and develop the transferable skills essential for life in the twenty-first century. The CHSSA strives in its undergraduate programs and in its University Study offerings to nurture creative thinking, intellectual curiosity, and academic integrity in students while providing them with a solid foundation of knowledge in their chosen fields. Graduate programs in the CHSSA are designed to develop intellectual competence and to prepare the student for careers in business, industry, government, teaching or for further study at the doctoral level. Applied learning is a hallmark of the student experience in the College of Humanities, Social Sciences, and the Arts. Each of the CHSSA's departments requires an applied learning experience as a part of the curriculum for its undergraduate majors. Examples include faculty-directed research, internships, service learning, and capstone courses and projects, all of which challenge students to integrate various strands of knowledge and to apply that knowledge to broader, real-world or real disciplinary situations. Brief Summary of Work for this Position: As part of the CHSSA Dean's Office Academic Resource Center (ARC) this position provides services that include advising and assisting students in making decisions about majors and careers. The Academic Advisor supports approximately 250-350 new and returning students in support of the College's strategic goals regarding orientation, transitional support, enrollment, retention, persistence, progression, and major declaration. This position advises on course selections appropriate to the student's academic goals, monitors academic performance, assists in timely declaration of a major or pre-major, maintains advising files, and supports students during academic and personal difficulty and making appropriate referrals as needed. The Academic Advisor identifies problems requiring intervention and assists with strategies for academic recovery as needed. Working with other faculty and staff, the Academic Advisor provides support to help position students for success during and after their time at UNCW. Advisors work with students from diverse populations with different strengths and needs. The Academic Advisor will develop a detailed understanding of student-related policies and advising best practices in order to provide individualized support for students. The Academic Advisor will use a holistic approach to address student needs by establishing strong relationships with students to guide them in exploring areas of study and resources necessary to be successful. In addition to managing a caseload, the Academic Advisor will also serve on taskforces, work with other university departments, and execute events to meet the needs of relevant student populations. Academic Advisors participate in orientation sessions and provide accurate academic information to support students as they make enrollment and curricular decisions. This position will report to an Academic Advising Coordinator or the Director of Academic Advising. This position relies heavily on effective communication via phone, video conference, email, and in-person; therefore, the Academic Advisor needs to be an excellent communicator, self-starter, quick learner, and able to work in a collaborative environment. This position may require irregular work hours, including occasional evenings and weekends.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements: A Bachelor's degree in Education, Counseling, Psychology, Student Affairs, or a closely related field with three years of progressive experience in academic advising, student support services, or a comparable area; or a Master's degree in Education, Counseling, Psychology, Student Affairs, or a closely related discipline. Experience utilizing a range of software applications and educational technologies, including Microsoft Office Suite, learning management systems, and other technology-enhanced delivery platforms.

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills & Experience: Master's degree with at least one year of advising or related experience working with students in a college setting. Experience with and commitment to working with students from diverse backgrounds (e.g., first-year, continuing, and transfer students; pre-professional students; adult learners, military students, on-campus and online students, students from historically underrepresented populations) and knowledge of issues of these student populations. Knowledgeable of best practices and theoretical foundations in the fields of advising, adult learning, and student development. Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills. Demonstrated ability to attend to details with a high degree of accuracy. Demonstrated commitment to, and execution of, high-level customer service.
