Academic Services and Certification Officer
Under the supervision of the Dean of the School of Education, the Academic Services Director/Teacher Certification Officer (ASD/TCO) is responsible for representing the Dean on student academic issues and serving as a resource on academic policies, procedures, and degree requirements for teacher education students, faculty, and staff. This position is responsible for verifying degree completion for undergraduate teacher education students and graduate students in master’s and certificate programs after each term.
The ASD/TCO is the lead academic advisor for teacher education majors and supports students, SOE, and SOE-affiliated faculty and staff with advising information aligned with approved programs.
The teacher certification officer is responsible for verifying program completion for graduates applying for licensure in any state requiring institutional verification of program completion and is the institutional resource on teacher licensing rules for the state of Wisconsin. The certification officer works closely with the Dean to ensure compliance with Wisconsin teacher licensing rules. Collection, maintenance, and reporting of program completers and testing for licensure data to state and federal agencies is the responsibility of this position.
Required Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in education, student affairs, or a comparable field
- Ability to problem-solve, process and make decisions at a fairly rapid pace
- Ability to communicate effectively and work collaboratively across campus and outside of campus
- Outstanding attention to details and strong organizational skills
- Ability to prioritize and complete tasks/responsibility based on strict timelines
- Ability to create and manipulate documents, spreadsheets, emails, and presentations using applications such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
- Ability to learn and use technology, including virtual conferencing platforms such as Teams and Zoom
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience as a certification officer or comparable experience
- Experience with advising and guiding students in a college, university or another education-related setting
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Represent the Dean on student academic issues, including approval of override requests, verifying degree completion, and evaluating transcripts.
- Provide advisement for teacher education students, update advisement reports, and advise transfer students.
- Administer university policies, serve as a resource for program directors, and participate in various committees.
- Manage student data, handle state and national reporting requirements, and serve as a resource on Wisconsin teacher licensing rules.
- Participate in professional development and complete other duties as assigned.
