FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT

Founded in 1971 in Long Island City, Queens, LaGuardia Community College is one of seven community colleges of the City University of New York (CUNY). LaGuardia offers more than sixty associate degree programs and more than fifty workforce training, ESOL, GED, and pre-college programs. In 2023, LaGuardia served approximately 24,000 students. More than one-third of LaGuardia’s degree-seeking students are born outside the United States; they come from 136 countries and speak 43 heritage languages. Sixty percent are first-generation college students.

Virtually all LaGuardia students are ethnic minorities (89 percent), 58 percent are women, 27 percent are over the age of 25. Forty-six percent of associate degree students are Hispanic. Upon graduation most students transfer to four-year colleges, typically in CUNY, to complete their baccalaureate degrees. Graduates of career programs such as Nursing, Computer Technology, and Veterinary Technology enter the workforce. LaGuardia ranked fifth among U.S. community colleges in economic mobility - moving low-income students into the middle class and beyond - in studies by Stanford University (2017) and the Brookings Institution (2020). The Humanities Department at LaGuardia Community College invites applications for the position of Adjunct Assistant Professor to teach two courses in Art History: the History of Design and the History of Illustration. The position would start in Spring 2026 (March). Candidates may apply for one or both courses.

The History of Design (HUA212):

This is an introduction to the history of design as a major independent element of visual arts, and the ways in which intentionally produced objects, environments and experiences both shape and reflect their historical moment. The course will investigate how good design is expressed in architecture, household objects, crafts, tools and transportation. Emphasis will be placed on the importance of social, political and cultural factors and the role they play on how objects and structures are made, and why they look the way they do. Museum visits will be required.

The History of Illustration (HUA214):

This course will examine the history of illustration from illuminated manuscripts to modern sequential narratives by considering the artwork within the framework of its culture. With the aid of primary source readings, illustrated books, and comics, students will learn to understand the unique power illustration has had in the history of art to convey ideas, to editorialize events, and to enhance literature. Emphasis is placed on illustration's relationship to fine art and on the education of the illustrator.

QUALIFICATIONS

Master’s degree in area of expertise (Art History, Studio Art) and the ability to teach successfully.

Preference will be given to applicants with prior college-level teaching experience within the same discipline.
