Description: The Department of Biosystems Engineering & Soil Science (BESS) at the University of Tennessee https://bess.tennessee.edu/ invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor (12-month appointment; 75% teaching/25% Extension). The responsibilities of this position include delivering coursework in the pre-construction curriculum within the Construction Science and Management Program and developing an outreach program in stormwater management with a focus on construction site applications. Housed in BESS, the Construction Science and Management Program, which began in 2010, has an undergraduate population of approximately 390 students and has a short-term goal of increasing the student numbers to 400. This program has become nationally recognized for providing graduates with the background and critical thinking skills needed to contribute to the construction industry of the future. https://ag.tennessee.edu/constructionscience/Pages/default.aspx The University of Tennessee is seeking a candidate who will contribute in meaningful ways to the diversity and intercultural goals of the Construction Science and Management Program, the Department, and the University.

Duties/Responsibilities: The successful candidate will work with the Faculty and the Director of the Construction Science and Management program, as well as representatives of the construction industry, to deliver pre-construction coursework and construction stormwater management, which will complement the comprehensive construction curriculum. Current areas of teaching need are project planning and controls, building information modeling (BIM), and construction surveying, although other areas will be considered. The candidate must also develop an active and nationally recognized extension education program in accordance with the goals and mission of the University of Tennessee Extension Service. The candidate must be willing to engage in innovative and interdisciplinary teaching, workforce development outreach, and service activities. Specific duties and responsibilities will include:

  • Teach courses within the Construction Science and Management curriculum.
  • Support the expansion and evolution of the current curriculum.
  • Support the development of a nationally recognized construction science program through participation in national construction education organizations and competitions, publication of teaching and outreach contributions to construction education, and the incorporation of innovative methods, software, and equipment into existing facilities to accommodate project management instruction.
  • Maintain a strong commitment to departmental, institutional, and professional citizenship. This includes advising/mentoring student associations and participation in associated enrichment activities, and service on departmental, college, and professional committees.
  • Advance the Project Management and Control curriculum while maintaining an accreditable status.
  • Promote the program’s success in pursuit of American Council for Construction Education accreditation.
  • Support the development of relationships with the various construction industry constituencies. This includes working closely with the Construction Science Advocacy Executive Board and promoting the program on a national level among various segments of the construction industry, including highway, large vertical, site development, residential, demolition, and related material/equipment suppliers.
  • Maintain relationships with other colleges and partner departments on campus to make the best use of expertise and resources that already exist at the University of Tennessee.

Qualifications: Ph.D. or Terminal Degree in Construction / Building Science / Architecture / Management / Engineering, or related field. The candidate must have a proven track record or demonstrated promise of strong teaching skills and outreach capabilities. Demonstrated excellence in written and oral communication skills is necessary.

Desired Qualifications: Desired additional qualifications include professional licensure or documented progress towards that; evidence of successful teaching of undergraduate construction courses; experience in the construction industry related to pre-construction including the preparation of industry deliverables, such as project scheduling using project management software, experience with construction procurement, and familiarity with environmental design documents, such as storm water pollution prevention plan (SWPPP) and aquatic resource alteration permit (ARAP) applications, for regulatory agencies.
