Position Summary

The Assistant Dean of Pre‑Clerkship Curriculum is a senior faculty member that provides academic leadership, strategic direction, and oversight for all components of the pre‑clerkship phase of the MD curriculum at the University of Georgia School of Medicine. Reporting to the Associate Dean for Curriculum, this individual leads a multi-disciplinary team of faculty and staff to ensure a rigorous, integrated, and innovative pre-clerkship curriculum that prepares students well for the clinical clerkships and eventual clinical practice. This role is responsible for ensuring that pre‑clerkship educational experiences are well‑integrated, instructionally sound, aligned with the school’s Medical Education Program Objectives, and compliant with LCME accreditation standards, particularly those related to curricular design, content integration, assessment, instructional quality, and continuous quality improvement.

The Assistant Dean works closely with course directors (13 pre‑clerkship courses), the Director of Small Group Learning, the Director of Anatomy, the Director of Curriculum Integration, the Assistant Dean for Assessment and Evaluation, and the Director of Teaching and Learning Development, as well as the Associate Dean for Curriculum. This leadership position ensures effective delivery of foundational scientific and clinical content, oversees the management and improvement of teaching and assessment processes, and supports faculty in advancing evidence‑based educational practices.

The Assistant Dean collaborates with curriculum operations and academic support teams to ensure that the pre‑clerkship curriculum is effectively scheduled, resourced, documented, and continuously evaluated to support student success and school‑wide accreditation goals.

This position will be housed in either the Department of Biomedical Sciences or the Department of Clinical Sciences, depending on the selected candidate’s degree and area of specialty.

Minimum Qualifications

MD, DO, PhD, or equivalent terminal degree.

Additional Requirements

  • This appointment will hold the rank of Clinical Assistant Professor, Clinical Associate Professor, or Clinical Professor, depending on the qualifications and experience of the candidate.   • Distinguished record of excellence in medical education and teaching.
  • Two years or more experience in curricular leadership (e.g., Course Director or Phase Director or equivalent).
  • Eligibility for a faculty appointment at UGA School of Medicine.

Relevant/Preferred Education, Experience, Licensure, and/or Certification

  • A minimum of two years in a role with demonstrable experience in the design and implementation of integrated, systems-based medical curricula.
  • 7+ years of experience in medical education, including progressive responsibility for curriculum innovation, instructional design, or assessment.
  • A minimum of two years in a role with demonstrable experience leading teams of faculty or staff within a complex academic or clinical environment.

Duties/Responsibilities

  1. Leadership of the Pre-clerkship Curriculum: In partnership with the Associate Dean for Curriculum, lead the pre-clerkship team and faculty in the design, development, and delivery of the pre-clerkship curriculum. Lead process, workflows, faculty collaboration, and integration of all pre-clerkship courses and required experiences.
  2. Curricular integration: Work with course directors and relevant leaders in the office of curriculum to ensure that the curriculum is vertically and horizontally integrated.
  3. Faculty and staff supervision and development: Supervise and provide mentorship to direct faculty reports and to the course directors. Collaborate with the Director of Curriculum to manage the work of the coordinators assigned to the pre-clerkship. Engage in faculty and staff development for direct reports, staff that work in the pre-clerkship, course directors, and faculty who teach in the pre-clerkship.
  4. Accreditation and quality improvement: Ensure that the pre-clerkship curriculum complies with LCME accreditation standards. Collaborate with the Assistant Dean for Evaluation and Assessment to improve the curriculum based on curriculum evaluation data.
  5. Student support and communication: Support the success of students in the pre-clerkship phase of the curriculum. Collaborate with student affairs, academic advising, and other student support teams on matters related to student success and student engagement with the curriculum. Communicate with students related to the curriculum, assessment, scheduling, and learning environment. Respond directly to student issues that may arise, and collaborate with student affairs and leadership in the curriculum office to address issues or concerns.
  6. Committee service and leadership: Serve on assigned committees and lead assigned committees as needed for curricular governance or as needed for the School of Medicine.
  7. Other duties as assigned by the Associate Dean for Curriculum.
