Assistant Director of Community Engagement and Service Learning
The Assistant Director of Community Engagement and Service Learning provides leadership for Manhattan University's community-engaged learning and service initiatives, with a particular focus on integration with the James Patterson Honors Program (JPHP). The role builds on the strong culture of service, civic engagement, and ethical leadership at Manhattan University, and responds to demonstrated student demand across campus for greater structure, academic integration, and sustained community partnerships.
Reporting to the Executive Director of the James Patterson Honors Program and working in close collaboration with the Faculty Coordinator of Community Engaged Learning, the Assistant Director supports faculty and students in connecting academic work, creative inquiry, and community-based engagement across disciplines. The position ensures that community engagement is reciprocal, reflective, and aligned with Manhattan University's Lasallian mission.
This is an in person on campus non-remote position.
James Patterson Honors Program Integration
- Serve as the primary staff lead for community engagement within the James Patterson Honors Program.
- Collaborate closely with JPHP leadership and faculty to design and support service-learning and community-engaged projects embedded in JPHP coursework.
- Respond to student interest in expanded engagement opportunities by offering a range of one-day, short-term, and sustained community experiences aligned with academic schedules.
- Support JPHP focus areas including civic engagement, literacy, ethical leadership, and social responsibility.
- Assist faculty in facilitating structured reflection that helps JPHP students connect community experiences to coursework, identity, and ethical reasoning.
- Track student participation and impact within JPHP to inform program development and assessment.
Community-Engaged Learning & Faculty Support
- Support faculty across schools in the design and implementation of Community-Engaged Learning (CEL) courses.
- Provide consultations, workshops, and pedagogical resources to faculty integrating community engagement into credit-bearing courses.
- Assist faculty and curriculum committees in developing learning goals, reflection activities, and assessment methods for CEL courses.
- Maintain a repository of CEL syllabi, course data, and engagement outcomes.
- Speak at New Faculty Orientation and JPHP faculty meetings as appropriate.
Community Partnerships & Civic Engagement
- Build and sustain reciprocal partnerships with local nonprofits, schools, civic organizations, advocacy groups, and faith-based institutions.
- Foster partnerships that support tutoring, mentoring, voter engagement, food rescue, literacy, and advocacy initiatives.
- Conduct site visits and maintain ongoing communication to ensure community-informed engagement.
- Plan and facilitate an annual Community Partner Summit, with strong participation from JPHP-affiliated partners.
- Co-chair the Community-Engaged Learning Advisory Committee and solicit regular feedback from faculty, students, and partners.
Student Service & Engagement Programs
- Facilitate and promote volunteer and service opportunities across campus.
- Encourage the development of student leadership within community engagement efforts.
- Advise and facilitate student organizations, athletics, campus ministry, and JPHP cohorts planning service and advocacy projects.
- Oversee programs such as Lasallian Day of Service, and other community engagement initiatives and practices.
- Supervise student leaders and work-study students supporting engagement programs.
Immersion & Experiential Programs
- Lead the re-establishment and coordination of immersion service trips.
- Support domestic and global immersion experiences.
Assessment, Administration & Risk Management
- Track participation, partnerships, and outcomes for JPHP and other community engagement initiatives.
- Coordinate orientations and risk management processes for all CEL and CBR courses.
- Maintain the CEL website and community partner database.
- Support institutional reporting on community engagement and impact.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree and 3+ years of experience in community engagement, service learning, or civic engagement in higher education or post-graduate service programs.
OR - Master's degree and 2+ years of related experience.
- Demonstrated experience working with students and faculty on service-learning or community-based projects.
- Strong facilitation, relationship-building, and organizational skills.
- Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends.
