Assistant/Associate Director: Center for Community Engagement and Service-Learning (CCESL)

The Assistant/Associate Director of Community Engagement and Service-Learning is a key position responsible for coordinating and sustaining volunteer initiatives, mentoring and supervising student leaders, and strengthening partnerships with community organizations to help ensure mutually beneficial outcomes. This role provides strategic oversight of volunteer programs, supports assessment and continuous improvement efforts, and may contribute to the academic mission of the Colleges through teaching or co-teaching community-engaged courses that connect theory with practice.

Essential Responsibilities:
Assistant Director Responsibilities
- Lead the development, implementation, evaluation, and reporting of co-curricular civic engagement programs, mentoring student leaders and cultivating and sustaining strategic relationships with community partners.
- Collaborate closely with faculty, staff, community stakeholders, and alumni to design and deliver high-quality, inclusive, and mission-aligned programming. Direct the management and assessment of comprehensive civic engagement initiatives, including:
- HWS Tutor Corps and federally funded work-study and grant-supported programs: oversee tutor recruitment, training, partner coordination, and budget stewardship to connect college students with local elementary school students
- Alternative Spring Break experiences: manage student recruitment and preparation, select and train student leaders, serve as trip chaperone, and provide logistical and risk management support across multiple sites
- Service-oriented student organizations and themed housing: provide administrative guidance, leadership development, and operational oversight.
- Campus-wide service events: coordinate large-scale initiatives
- Student civic participation efforts: lead voter registration and education campaigns (HWS Votes) and support the Civic Scholar cohort.
- Advance communications and outreach through strategic use of social media, digital newsletters, and in-person recruitment to increase participation and visibility.
- Perform the requirements as a Campus Security Authority pursuant to the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Crime Statistics Act (20 U.S.C. 1092 (f) (Clery Act).
- Represent CCESL and Hobart and William Smith Colleges at Admissions programs and local civic initiatives as an ambassador for the institution's community engagement mission.
Associate Director additional responsibilities
- Teach course(s) connected to Centennial Center's Leadership Certificate Program.
- Actively collaborate with Geneva 2030 through sustained participation on action teams, strategic event planning, and ongoing program assessment to advance shared community goals
- Lead assessment and continuous improvement initiatives by integrating local and national data
- Pursue and develop grant proposals to secure external funding and expand programmatic capacity
- Contribute to short- and long-term strategic planning connected to leadership and community engagement opportunities and priorities
Other Information:
This is a full-time, 12-month, benefits-eligible position. This position description is not all-inclusive as other tasks or responsibilities may be assigned. Standard work hours are 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. during the academic year, with a possible shortened workweek during the scheduled summer hours' time period. Work schedule will include some evenings and weekends. Salary range: $63,400- $70,000
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree required in related field; master's degree or progress toward a master's degree in related field, preferred.
- 2+ years of experience in public service leadership and a record of civic involvement and leadership; college or university setting preferred.
- Superior attention to detail, problem-solving skills, organizational skills, project planning and electronic, verbal, and written communication skills.
- Demonstrated knowledge of and commitment to diversity and the ability to interact with a diverse population.
- Possess strong communication skills and be willing to take initiative.
- Highly reliable, flexible and adaptable.
