Job Description

California Lutheran University invites applicants for a tenure-track position as Assistant Professor of Psychology for the undergraduate program beginning in the fall of 2026. As a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI), the university seeks candidates with a demonstrated commitment to and success working in diverse, multi-cultural, and multi-racial communities.

Under the direction of the Dean and Department Chair, the Assistant Professor is responsible for providing academic instruction to students in assigned undergraduate courses, serving as an academic advisor, contributing to department and university activities, serving on committees, and engaging in scholarly activities.

Applicants must hold a Ph.D. or Psy.D. in Clinical or Counseling Psychology or be ABD with a set date for degree completion. Candidates must have research expertise in Clinical or Counseling Psychology and maintain an active research program involving undergraduate students. The successful candidate must demonstrate commitment to working with a diverse student population using innovative and culturally inclusive teaching approaches.

Primary responsibilities include teaching courses such as Abnormal Psychology, Specialized Psychopathology, Psychological Assessments, Theories of Personality, Counseling-Related Capstones, and introductory Statistics and Research Methods courses (3 per semester). Additional duties include advising students, mentoring undergraduate research, participating in department activities, and serving on committees.

Representative Duties:

  • Teach specified undergraduate courses.
  • Create assignments and activities to foster active learning.
  • Evaluate student performance and provide timely feedback.
  • Hold office hours in person on campus at least 4 days per week.
  • Maintain an active research program with undergraduate involvement.
  • Prepare and submit records related to course and student progress.
  • Adhere to teaching, advising, and service responsibilities as outlined in the faculty handbook.
  • Attend meetings and participate on committees.

Knowledge Of:

  • Clinical or Counseling Psychology, including statistics and quantitative methodology.
  • Current theory and practice in the discipline, effective teaching principles, and student learning outcomes.
  • Community and campus resources.

Ability To:

  • Demonstrate thorough knowledge in the subject field and deliver curricula in various styles.
  • Mentor a diverse student population and integrate instructional technologies.
  • Communicate effectively and maintain professional standards.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. or Psy.D. in Clinical or Counseling Psychology from an accredited institution, or ABD with a set completion date.
  • Evidence of teaching and research related to underrepresented populations.
  • Record of publications and/or presentations in the specialty area.

Preferred Qualifications:

Ability to teach specific courses and demonstrate mastery in statistics and research methods. Potential for contributions to the university community.

Hiring Range:

$72,000-$80,000 annually.
