Job Summary

The Non-Destructive Testing Instructor is responsible for delivering high-quality instruction in NDT methods to students preparing for careers in industrial inspection, quality assurance, and materials evaluation. This faculty position supports student success through hands-on training, theoretical instruction, and preparation for industry-recognized certifications.
The instructor will teach courses aligned with ASNT SNT-TC-1A and NAS-410 standards, covering techniques such as Radiographic Testing (RT), Ultrasonic Testing (UT), Eddy Current Testing (ET), Liquid Penetrant Testing (PT), and Magnetic Particle Testing (MT). Responsibilities include curriculum development, student assessment, lab supervision, and collaboration with industry partners to ensure program relevance.

All Faculty will maintain an on-site campus presence to encourage in-person relationships and create engaging, meaningful, and impactful learning experiences.
You are required to maintain professional boundaries with all SLCC students.

Essential Job Responsibilities
  1. Provide effective student-centered instruction and assessment.
  2. Supervises students in lab setting, ensuring safety and skill development through hands-on training.
  3. Alongside department colleagues, build a process of continuous quality improvement for relevant programs.
  4. Comply with all college employee policies and procedure
  5. Comply with the Academic Freedom, Professional Responsibility, and Tenure policy
  6. Comply with FERPA policy and other pertinent local, state, and federal regulations.
  7. Maintain professional communication etiquette with students.
  8. Become a contributing member of the academic unit by engaging in collegial communications and working closely with colleagues and academic supervisors to enhance student success.
  9. Maintain a meaningful on-campus presence to enhance community, serve students on campus, and collaborate with colleagues. Campus presence can reflect teaching, professional activities, and/or service as established with your academic supervisor.
  10. Work to address student issues as outlined in the Code of Students Rights and Responsibilities.
  11. Engage in shared governance.
  12. Develop, revise and maintain curriculum aligned with industry ASNT and NAS standards and certifications.
  13. Prepare students for level 1 and 2 certification exams.
  14. Engage in best practices of student assessments.
  15. Engage in the faculty evaluation process annually.
  16. Attend, and participate in, required meetings and events, including Convocation, Commencement, SLCC 360, and department meetings.
  17. Promote the mission, vision, values, and goals of the College through inclusive teaching, professional activity, and service.
  18. Maintain and calibrate NDT equipment and supplies.
Expectations for Effective Teaching
  1. Create a learning environment focused on student success for each modality taught.
  2. In the case of online instruction, facilitate regular and substantive interaction in online courses conducted and observable in the official LMS.
  3. Teach courses consistent with institutional and department standards, appropriate Course Curriculum Outline (CCO), and catalog description.
  4. Use the college-approved syllabus platform to inform students of course policies and learning outcomes.
  5. Teach classes assigned by the academic supervisor per the published class schedule adhering to days, times, and duration.
  6. Demonstrates the incorporation of active and applied learning in courses taught.
  7. Provide appropriate feedback for all assignments that allows students to progress in the course.
  8. Maintain current grades in the college learning management system (LMS eg Canvas). Use the LMS communication tool as the primary tool for course communication with students.
  9. Maintain accurate records of student performance and submit required documentation.
  10. Advise and mentor students on academic and career pathways.
  11. Responds to instruction and daily needs of students, departments, college, and community.
  12. Be available to meet with students outside of class a minimum of 5 hours/week for student consultation hours. Availability should reflect modality of class and utilize online tools to maximize student access.
  13. Consistently improve pedagogy, course quality, design, and course integrity in response to course, program, and/or college-wide assessment of student learning.
  14. Evaluate student performance and provide timely feedback for student improvement (mastery).
  15. Maintain student last day of attendance (for Financial Aid purposes).
  16. Conduct formative evaluations of student performance by the last day to drop.
  17. Publishes course schedule, assignment due dates, late and grading policies, and communication expectations in the learning management system.
  18. Assist in maintaining a safe and mutually respectful instructional environment. Prepare and submit incident reports to the Dean of Student Services for inappropriate student behavior as defined by the Code of Student Rights and Responsibilities Policy.
  19. Use appropriate resources and technology in the delivery of courses.
  20. Respond to student communication promptly (generally within 1-2 working days) and have a communication plan posted in the LMS with response times.
Expectations for Professional Activity and Development
  1. Stay current with advancements in Non-destructive technology and integrate them into instruction.
  2. Maintain necessary credentials, professional skills, and teaching competencies consistent with department standards.
  3. Collaborate with colleagues by solicits, soliciting feedback and responsive to suggestions from students and colleagues on pedagogy and the learning environment.
  4. Engage in discipline-specific activities.
  5. Participate in program review, accreditation processes, advisory committee meetings.(PAC)
  6. Participate in annual professional development and institutional service activities.
  7. Participate in grant writing to obtain equipment and resources for student learning.
  8. Expand knowledge of teaching practices to enhance student learning and success.
  9. Maintain and manage lab equipment, tools and supplies.
  10. Participate in mentoring relationships, serving as a mentor and/or mentee in the department and college.
  11. Participate in mandatory departmental and college professional development.
Expectations for Service to the College
  1. Provide service to the institution through appropriate participation in academic and college committee assignments and departmental and college need.
  2. Tenured faculty serve on tenure sitting committees for colleagues; provide leadership and instructional integrity through classroom observation and mentoring.
  3. Work with department to review and recommend program textbooks and/or materials.
  4. Engage in the student advising process, formally and/or informally as needed.
  5. Develop and/or participate in student recruitment and/or retention strategies.
  6. Assist with the assessment of credit for prior learning as needed.
  7. Participate in the formulation and implementation of department initiatives.
  8. Mentor and provide formative feedback to adjunct faculty.
  9. Serve community partners as content area experts as appropriate.
  10. Maintain inventory, if appropriate, of equipment, tools, supplies, and storage/ disposal of hazardous materials required for classes and request appropriate equipment repair.
  11. Actively participate with your department in the informed budget process by identifying budgetary needs, priorities, and opportunities to reduce or reallocate existing funds.
  12. Other activities as needed for the department, school, or institution.

Minimum qualifications

  • Associate's degree in science, non-destructive testing or a related field.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of documented industry experience in NDT.
  • Level II certification in 3 or more NDT methods (RT, UT, ET, PT, MT).
  • Strong communication and instructional skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • The ability to be certified in all 5 NDT areas within 2 years of hire date.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in science, materials science, engineering, or related field.
  • Level III certification in all 5 areas of NDT methods.
  • Prior teaching experience at the post-secondary level.
  • Experience with curriculum development and student assessment.
  • Familiarity with online learning platforms and hybrid instruction.

Faculty Compensation and Workload Handbook

The base salary is a 9-month Academic Year appointment and paid over annual basis. Additional compensation may be available when teaching overload classes.
Summer Semester is paid at 23.5% of base for a full teaching load.
