About the Department

The Department of Learning Sciences is an interdisciplinary unit dedicated to improving the human condition through data-driven investigation of the learning process, through the effective design of learning innovations, and through the development of learning science professionals in five distinct areas of specialization: Applied Behavior Analysis, Deaf Studies, Educational Psychology, Learning Technologies, and Special Education.

Position Description

The Department of Learning Sciences in Georgia State University’s College of Education and Human Development invites applications for a full-time Assistant Professor to support the Deaf Studies program at Georgia State University beginning August 1, 2026. This tenure-track faculty position is designed for experienced professionals with expertise at the intersection of Deaf Studies, Sign Language Interpreting, and Deaf Education. We are looking for a strong applicant with a background in interpreting and/or teaching in an ITP / SLIP program. Applicant having experiences in other fields such as Deaf Education or Deaf Studies is a plus.

The successful candidate will help shape and lead the Sign Language Interpreting Program through innovative undergraduate teaching, curriculum development, partnership-building, and program leadership. Candidates should have a strong record of teaching, mentoring, research and professional work related to Deaf Studies, Sign Language Interpreting, and/or Deaf Education. We especially welcome applicants with a strong potential for research in these fields.

Assistant Professors are expected to teach undergraduate courses, advise students, contribute to program coordination, build relationships with community partners to create experiential learning opportunities for students, and conduct and disseminate research in the field.

Required Experience

Required Education
A terminal degree (e.g., Ph.D., Ed.D., or equivalent) in Deaf Studies, Sign Language Interpreting, Deaf Education or a related area.

Preferred Qualifications/Experience

Candidates should have experience in the following areas:

  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching or leading educational programs at the undergraduate or graduate level
  • Experience with working with Deaf communities as a sign language interpreter, educator, or other related professional
  • Licensure or ability to obtain licensure in the interpreting field and/or Deaf Education
  • Experience overseeing students completing a program that leads to field licensure/certification
  • Experience with designing, implementing, and disseminating research.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Expertise in allyship with Deaf communities to promote equity and access.
  • Ability to collaborate across sectors and disciplines
  • Effective teaching and mentoring skills with diverse cohorts of undergraduate students
  • Strong communication, leadership, and organizational skills
  • Capacity to design novel research that pushes forward Deaf Studies fields

Licenses, Certifications, or Registrations, etc

Assistant Professors teaching within the Sign Language Interpreting Program are required to hold NIC or BEI certification. While not required, though teaching certifications would be considered a valuable asset.
