Assistant Professor of Psychology

The Department of Psychological and Cognitive Sciences at Randolph College is accepting applications for a tenure-track assistant professor in clinical or counseling psychology to begin in August 2026. We seek a colleague with a strong commitment to teaching excellence. We offer a major and minor in both psychology and in cognitive science with a long tradition of research-based psychological inquiry emphasizing research design, interpretation of data, and practical application.

Primary Responsibilities

Typical teaching load is 3 courses per semester in our innovative Take2 curricular model where courses are offered in two 7-week sessions each semester.

The successful candidate will teach introductory and advanced undergraduate courses that maintain and enhance the psychology curriculum. Courses in the regular teaching rotation include introduction to psychology, psychological disorders, clinical and counseling psychology, and additional courses in the candidate’s area of specialization.

Faculty in the department maintain active research programs and our facilities include virtual reality and children’s lab spaces.

The successful candidate will have the potential to develop a productive internship program for our majors and foster student involvement in research.

Service to the institution, including undergraduate academic advising and committee work, is also expected.

Job Description

Summary/objective

The Department of Psychological and Cognitive Science is seeking to fill a tenure-track position in clinical or counseling psychology. We seek a colleague with a strong commitment to teaching excellence and the potential to develop a productive internship program for our majors and foster student involvement in research.

Essential functions

  • Typical teaching load is three courses per semester
  • Work closely with other instructors and special programs and services within the college to determine placements, curriculum, and academic support
  • Participate in course development, assessment, accreditation, and planning activities
  • Participate in departmental meetings and recruitment activities; serve on college-wide committees
  • Serve as an academic adviser for psychology majors.
  • Supervise undergraduate internships, research projects, honors theses, and independent studies
  • Demonstrate a strong commitment to teaching and learning
  • Demonstrate an understanding and commitment to the college mission
  • Engage in continuing education to maintain clinical competencies and stay current with best practices

Competencies

  • Demonstrated expertise in quantitative research methodologies
  • Proficiency in statistical analysis software (SPSS)
  • Comprehensive understanding of psychopathology, assessment, and evidence-based treatment approaches
  • Effective classroom instruction and curriculum development skills
  • Experience with a wide range of evidence-based pedagogies that support student learning

Required education and experience

  • Ph.D. or Psy.D in psychology (area of specialization is counseling/clinical) completed by August 2026
  • Evidence of demonstrated or potential excellence in undergraduate instruction
  • Evidence of active research and scholarship
  • Ability to teach required courses in our major program

Preferred education and experience

  • Experience teaching and mentoring undergraduate students who are traditionally underrepresented
  • Demonstrated experience creating inclusive classrooms

Work authorization/security clearance requirements: Must be authorized to work in the United States. Pre-employment criminal background checks.

Required qualifications for tenure-track assistant professor

  • A Ph.D. or Psy.D in clinical or counseling psychology completed by August 2026 and teaching experience at the undergraduate level is required.
  • Demonstrated expertise in quantitative research methodologies
