The Department of Sociology invites applications for a tenure track assistant professor position with employment beginning in September 2026. The Department is looking for a quantitative or mixed-methods scholar with a primary interest in immigration and a secondary interest in gender, stratification, the practice of social work, or the dynamics of non-profit/non-governmental organizations. The candidate should be prepared to teach courses in their subject area, as well as contribute to the core curriculum, teaching both statistics and social research methods in the undergraduate and graduate programs.

The Department of Sociology consists of nine full-time faculty teaching in both undergraduate and a graduate program in sociology. The department is an integral unit in the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences and has collaborative ties with other units in the college and the university, including the Center for Community Health Equity, the Honors Program, the Liberal Studies Program, and the Steans Center for Community-Based Service Learning.

Qualifications:

A PhD in sociology is required; ABD candidates will be considered if they have a conferral date in the first year of employment.

Application Instructions:

Please electronically submit the following for consideration:

  • A cover letter (1,500-word limit) describing teaching and research interests.
  • A current curriculum vitae.
  • Supporting materials demonstrating teaching effectiveness, such as syllabi and course evaluations from past courses as instructor of record (if available) (note: sample syllabi for proposed courses are also welcome).
  • Research/writing sample that clearly demonstrates proficiency in statistical work/data analysis.
  • Contact information for three reference letters from the applicant's sociology faculty.

The interview process will include teaching one class session to undergraduate students, most likely either Introduction to Sociology (SOC 101) or Social Problems (SOC 105), and meeting with undergraduate and graduate students in the program. Additionally, candidates will be required to give a research presentation.

Review of applications will begin January 5, 2026, and will continue until the position is filled.

Salary Information: The salary range for this 10-month position is $70,400 - $74,000, commensurate with qualifications and experience.
