Salary: Commensurate with education and experience. The anticipated initial rate of compensation for the Associate editor position working in the United States is $86,000 – $90,000 per year.

Science Magazine, published by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), seeks an Associate or Senior Editor to join our Editorial team, working either in our Washington, DC, USA, Cambridge, UK office, or remotely in the US or UK.
We are looking for someone with a strong research background in Infectious Disease and Microbiomes (at the post-doctoral level) with broad interests in infectious diseases including virology, microbiology, and parasitology and microbiome research at the molecular, cellular, and biomedical level. We seek applicants who love science and are able to rigorously and critically evaluate scientific work.
Candidates are expected to travel internationally to scientific meetings and institutions, and to interact extensively with the scientific community in order to encourage excellent manuscripts to come to Science. Responsibilities include managing the selection, review, and editing of research manuscripts, working with authors on revisions, soliciting review articles and special issues, and fostering contacts and communication with the scientific community.
What You’ll Do
- Manage the evaluation, review, and editing of submitted manuscripts in the fields of infectious disease and microbiome.
- Judge the scientific value of submitted research and make decisions based on input from advisors and reviewers, and in consultation with colleagues.
- Provide recommendations and consult with authors on manuscript revision.
- Write summaries of research results for publication.
- Follow the manuscript through the production process to ensure material is published in a timely manner.
- Commission, review and edit timely review articles on a broad range of topics within your field of expertise.
- Network with the scientific community through meetings and professional contacts and encourage submission of excellent manuscripts.
- Represent Science at scientific meetings nationally and internationally.
Minimum Requirements
- PhD related to Infectious disease and/or microbiomes.
- 1-5 years of post-doctoral research experience (a Senior Editor would also require at least 5 years of relevant editorial experience).
- Proven track record of publishing high-quality research papers in scientific journals.
- Knowledge of the field that will allow you to evaluate manuscripts and to develop a strong network of expert contacts.
- Outreach skills to be effective at acquiring excellent papers.
- Exceptional written, communication, and listening skills.
- Ability to work constructively as a member of a tight-knit team.
