The research specialist(s) will work directly with Professors Arvind Narayanan and Zeynep Tufekci, on a number of AI and society projects, including future books. The work will entail conducting original and library research addressing questions on AI, policy and society, or developing technical prototypes, examples or research projects.

We seek self-driven, creative thinkers and doers with strong research and writing skills who are comfortable working in an interdisciplinary environment. Successful candidates must have experience in basic research, academic literature review, and research-based writing. Successful candidates must demonstrate the ability to read and interpret statistical or computational research, and follow developments in the fast-changing field of AI, including but not limited to, familiarity and technical understanding of AI models and their uses and developments.

This is a full-time, one-year term position with the possibility of renewal. Please submit your application at https://www.princeton.edu/acad-positions/position/39082 along with your CV, cover letter, a writing sample (up to five pages), and contact information of at least two references.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Compiling examples and ongoing developments in the rapidly changing field of AI including frontier models, prompts, uses and vulnerabilities, technical constraints and other appropriate topics.
  • Writing briefs and memos summarizing research findings, displaying trends, and interpreting data patterns. Potentially developing technical models, projects and other such contributions.
  • Contributing to AI evaluation projects through software engineering and data science.
  • Attending and contributing to team meetings, collaborating with undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral researchers. Attending workshops, conferences and meetings at Princeton and other research organizations.

Qualifications

Essential Qualifications: At least a Master's degree in a related field is required. Must have experience reading and summarizing qualitative and quantitative data and industry or academic research and writing papers based on that research.

Preferred Qualifications: Demonstrated ability to work in an interdisciplinary fashion, merging technical knowledge with policy acumen and sociological understanding. Evidence of research experience, including experience as a research assistant or a senior or masters thesis.

The work location for these positions is in-person on campus at Princeton University. These positions are subject to the University's background check policy.

Expected Salary Range: $61,008 - $80,000

The University considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's qualifications, work experience, education/training, key skills, market, collective bargaining agreements as applicable, and organizational considerations when extending an offer. The posted salary range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate for a full-time position; salaries for part-time positions are pro-rated accordingly.
