Department Information

The Associate Director will assist the Director in achieving the following objectives:

  • Lead the Center's scientists in their pursuit of research on the world's most prevalent and serious health problems.
  • Shape and grow the CBRI.
  • Expand the CBRI's national and international research profile.
  • Forge meaningful partnerships with internal and external partners.
  • Foster collaboration and multidisciplinary approaches.

Primarily housed on the Armstrong campus (Savannah), the CBRI will be the epicenter of engagement for research collaboration between the Medical College of Georgia (MCG), the future dental school, and biomedical researchers at Georgia Southern.

Potential research clusters may include: Cancer biology, Cardiovascular biology, Immunology, Molecular Medicine, Pharmacology, Bioinformatics & Computational Biology, Infectious Diseases, Genomics & Genetics, Neuroscience.

This position will report to the Director of the Center for Biomedical Research and Innovation (CBRI) under the Dean of the College of Science and Mathematics (COSM).

Job Summary

Reporting to the Director, the Associate Director requires 10% effort in Teaching, 60% effort in Scholarship, and 30% effort in Service. The position is a 12-month, tenure-track appointment.

Required Qualifications

  • A terminal degree, including Ph.D., M.D., or M.D./Ph.D. or other science or health-related terminal degree.
  • Extensive research experience in biomedical sciences, biology, biochemistry, or a related field.
  • At least 5-10 years of experience leading successful cross-disciplinary research teams.
  • Experience in, or at least a firm understanding of, the range of scientific disciplines and areas represented by CBRI's mission.
  • Acute understanding of securing externally funded grants and contracts.
  • Proven capacity to successfully mentor and develop early-career researchers.
  • History of successful and effective staff management and professional development.
  • A strong track record of external funding.
  • Willingness to engage with institutional student success initiatives.
  • Commitment to engaging with best practice initiatives in instruction and pedagogy.
  • Demonstrated commitment to advancing a strong and growing research and scholarship agenda.
  • Minimum of 5 years full-time college/university teaching experience at the assistant professor level for the rank of associate professor.
  • Minimum of 5 years full-time college/university teaching experience at the associate professor level for the rank of professor.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Extensive research experience at a research-intensive university.
  • Successful and sustained record of achieving high levels of research-based funding as a Principal Investigator.
  • Existing externally funded research in areas of science represented by CBRI.
  • Experience developing and leading successful partnerships with external partners.
  • A record of pursuing and supporting technology transfer and licensing, and economic development activities.
  • For the rank of Professor, a record of leading innovative interdisciplinary research collaborations, multiple funded grants, and a publication record in significant Q1 journals.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
