Associate Research Scientist

Research position at the level of Associate Research Scientist (ARS) is available at the Center for Radiological Research (CRR.columbia.edu) at Columbia University Irving Medical Center in New York for the advanced development of our protein biomarker-based, high throughput FAST-DOSE biodosimetry tool, designed to quantify radiation dose in an exposed individual and guide medical management decisions following a mass-casualty radiological/nuclear emergency. We are seeking a highly motivated Associate Research Scientist with a strong background in radiation biology who will be responsible for the analytical testing of the FAST-DOSE bioassay system, across 1) an array of biological variables (age and sex, immune status, and specific health conditions) that could potentially confound dose estimations in human and NHP blood ex vivo and 2) longitudinal protein measurements in the peripheral blood of WAG/RijCmcr rats exposed to TBI or PBI doses. Using the datasets generated from these studies, qualified candidates will also work closely with our team biostatistician towards multiparametric modeling of the biomarker signals to assess the dose predictive accuracy of FAST-DOSE bioassay. In addition, there will be the opportunity to design and conduct a broad range of studies aimed at testing the validation and verification of the biodosimetry assay system. There will also be opportunities to perform further validation and verification studies of the biodosimetry assay system as required by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate proficiency in working with protein assays and immunofluorescence techniques with human blood cells.
  • A team player with strong organizational skills with extensive experience with basic laboratory techniques and knowledge of biological sciences is required.
  • Good communication with the principal investigator and collaborators outside of Columbia.
  • Responsible for the design, execution, statistical analysis, critical evaluation, and interpretation of the research results for presentations and manuscript publication as well as effective writing skills.
  • Assist in the preparation of final reports and summaries of work in progress and provides oral briefings on the research as required.
  • Ensure that research results are published whenever possible in peer-reviewed scientific journals and presents data at scientific meetings.
