AY26 - Chicano Sudies Instructor
West Los Angeles College is seeking a dynamic Chicana/o Studies faculty member to teach a wide variety of courses in the Chicana/o Studies discipline in the Language Arts Division. The department is seeking a creative faculty member with a demonstrated commitment to their discipline and hopes to attract an educator who will assist in the growth of its course offerings and transfer/employment opportunities for its students. The ideal candidate is a motivated instructor who will serve as an inspiration to the students. This is a 10 month calendar appointment, however, opportunities may exist for summer and winter intersession teaching. Teaching assignments may include in-person/on campus, online, hybrid, and offsite Dual Enrollment classes at local high schools.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Teach the regular standard load of 15 hours per semester of Chicana/o Studies courses, focused on contemporary urban society, gender/sexuality, Chicana/o history, literature, art, film, and maintain scheduled office hours for student contact (5 hours and 35 minutes per week).
- Assess student performance and maintain accurate student records.
- Submit syllabi, rosters, Student Learning Outcomes (SLO) assessments, and grades in a timely fashion.
- Participate in professional development activities and maintain current knowledge in the discipline.
- Collaborate with colleagues in Student Learning Outcomes assessments, program review, and curriculum updates.
- Collaborate with colleagues to develop curriculum in the Chicana/o Studies discipline and to ensure that curriculum aligns with the standards for intersegmental credit in Ethnic Studies.
- Participate in division and campus committees and activities.
- Collaborate with WLAC faculty in creating and incorporating culturally relevant curriculum into their courses.
- Perform other academic duties as assigned.
Required Minimum Qualifications
- Master's degree in Chicano Studies, or Master's degree in Ethnic Studies, or the equivalent; and sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, cultural, gender/sexuality, socioeconomic, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty, and staff.
Desired Qualifications
- Advanced education beyond the minimum required.
- Research experience and possession of an excellent academic record that indicates a strong background in Chicana/o Studies.
- At least three to five years of Chicana/o Studies discipline teaching experience in a community college, college, or university setting.
- Breadth in the Chicana/o Studies discipline.
- Enthusiasm for and knowledge of effective teaching and learning strategies and the assessment of student learning (e.g., Student Learning Outcomes).
- Effective communication skills with students and colleagues in a multi-ethnic and cultural environment.
- Online teaching experience, Canvas certification, and evidence of equity-minded instruction in online classes.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with various academic departments and service areas at the college.
- Demonstrated experience or ability to promote active, inclusive learning environments and curricula that welcome and engage all students, incorporating instructional technologies, as appropriate, to improve student learning; cultural responsiveness in interactions with students, faculty, staff, and community members; collaborative approaches to day-to-day activities; self-reflection on teaching, leadership, professional development, and service to the campus community; and a rich variety of educational experiences including undergraduate research internships and student driven clubs.
Compensation and Benefits
The current starting range is from $74,500 to $138,430 for the ten-month academic year depending on educational preparation and professional experience. The doctoral differential is $4,710 per academic year.
