The Chair of Arts and Sciences assists the Vice President of Academic Affairs with the administrative functions and oversees the day-to-day instruction of the programs within Arts and Sciences (e.g. Social Work). The Chair also oversees and has responsibility for the general education (LENSES) program. The Chair provides administrative leadership in collaboration with the Vice President of Academic Affairs, faculty, and committees in areas of curriculum development, institutional and department assessment, and improvement, developing, mentoring, and evaluating the faculty who teach in the baccalaureate programs. The Chair collaborates with other divisions at Methodist College in response to evolving issues and provides leadership in developing and achieving strategic initiatives.

Responsibilities

Teaching Assignment

  • The position is responsible for a 50% teaching load, including six (6) semester credit hours each semester (fall and spring). With approval, and in cases where enrollment is assured, the Chair may seek approval to teach up to three (3) credits in the summer or other special semester, thus lightening the load during one or more of the regular semesters or as an adjunct assignment. A lesser teaching load may be approved by the Dean in collaboration with the Chancellor to accommodate special assignments with justification (e.g. grant funding, etc.)
  • This position has a requirement of being present on campus five days a week.

Administration

  • Selects, interviews, hires, orients, develops, mentors, and evaluates Arts and Sciences faculty in the Arts and Sciences Division, with emphasis on General Education, aligning teaching assignments with faculty qualifications as required by the Higher Learning Commission.
  • Mentors full time faculty and adjunct faculty to use enterprise academic systems effectively (e.g. CAMS and D2L)
  • Guides faculty and students to use support services effectively, including Academic Support Services, Office of Access, Support, and Inclusion Services, Information Technology, and other services as needed.
  • In collaboration with the Dean of Academic Affairs, develops the operational, personnel, and capital budgets for the Academic Affairs Division in collaboration with faculty; assures alignment of resources with strategic plan; monitors expenditures to maintain operations within planned budget.
  • Prepares schedule of undergraduate courses to be offered in the fall, spring, summer, and special semesters.
  • Serves on college and Arts and Sciences committees as assigned.
  • Meets with students as needed.
  • Collaborates with the recruitment team and assists with recruitment of students in Arts and Sciences.
  • Collaborates with recruitment team with new student onboarding and orientation programming.

Faculty Leadership

  • Provides leadership, mentorship, and performance review for full-time and adjunct faculty focusing on faculty who are teaching primarily in the general education program
  • Engages undergraduate faculty in the development of new curricula or in revision of existing curricula to meet the mission and vision of the college (e.g. college of choice for healthcare education in the region).
  • Leads strategic planning initiatives for the Arts and Sciences programs, assuring progress toward the existing strategic plan. Works collaboratively with the Dean of Academic Affairs to assure progress towards the strategic plan.
  • Collaborates with the leadership of the faculty organization to enact shared governance that provides a partnership between faculty and administration
  • Engage with the Core Curriculum/LENSES and Undergraduate Student Learning Outcomes committee of the Faculty Senate to align offerings with the core curriculum requirements.

Teamwork and alignment with mission, vision and values

  • Is an engaged and active member of the Academic Affairs Leadership Team and the Senior Leadership Team, serving as a conduit for communication and information.
  • Fosters collaborative teamwork among constituents of Methodist College to support the mission, vision, and strategic plan.
  • Guide development of new programs/courses to support the strategic plan.

Accreditation/Regulation/Policy

  • Assures current knowledge of, and compliance with, Higher Learning Commission, Department of Education, Illinois Department of Higher Education, Illinois Department of Finance and Professional Regulation, and program specific accreditation and regulatory requirements.
  • Guides faculty to assure student management in accordance with Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) regulations and Title IX clinical accommodations, within Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) Guidelines, and in accordance with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).
  • Develops and revises Methodist College policies as needed; assures that faculty and staff are aware of policies and that they are enacted/upheld.
  • Incorporates changes to curricula, courses, and/or policies in the MC Catalog/Student Handbook/Program specific Handbooks.

Qualifications

Education:

  • PhD in a field taught in Arts and Sciences, preferably in one of the domains in general education

Work Experience:

  • Academic Leadership - 2 years

Specialized Knowledge and Skill

  • Extensive written and verbal communication across divisions and across staff hierarchy.
  • Knowledge of shared governance systems.
  • Assessment of student learning outcomes and core curriculum requirements.
  • Manage competing priorities in a time sensitive manner with timeline expectations and accountability.
  • Experience in human resources management at the departmental level.
  • Experience in pedagogical practices that facilitate student engagement and success in learning, such as online learning and curriculum design.
  • Promotes an academic environment of professional growth, accountability, and success.
  • Knowledge of an academic degree or discipline included in the Arts & Sciences Division content to support teaching assignment
  • Knowledge of accreditation standards and regulatory requirements.

Salary Range

The compensation range for this position is $31.08 per hour - $53.46 per hour. This represents a good faith minimum and maximum range for the role at the time of posting by Carle Health. The actual compensation offered a candidate will be dependent on a variety of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate’s experience, qualifications, location, training, licenses, shifts worked and compensation model.
