Director of Faculty and Staff Development

Position Summary/Description:

The Director of Faculty and Staff Development will lead the design, coordination, and delivery of programs and resources that strengthen professional growth, engagement, and success among faculty and staff at the Gillings School of Global Public Health. This role will curate and share development opportunities available across campus and beyond; organize seminars, workshops, and trainings that align with identified needs; and build systems to support clear, equitable career pathways. The Director will also provide one-on-one consultation and coaching to faculty and staff, helping individuals assess their goals and identify development opportunities aligned with the school's mission and values.

Working collaboratively with the Senior Associate Dean for Faculty and Staff Affairs, the Associate Dean for Wellbeing, and Assistant Dean of Human Resources,, the Director will help build the strategic and operational foundation for a newly created unit that integrates career development, professional wellbeing, and organizational culture. This includes supporting consistent processes for professional advancement. The role will ensure alignment with university policies while tailoring approaches to the Gillings community's unique context as a large, interdisciplinary public health school.

This position requires both strategic vision and hands-on implementation. The Director will serve as a connector across departments and roles, ensuring that faculty and staff have access to meaningful learning opportunities at all career stages. By promoting collaboration, transparency, and accountability in development practices, the Director will play a key role in fostering an environment where faculty and staff feel valued, supported, and equipped to achieve their full potential.

Ultimately, the Director of Faculty and Staff Development will advance Gillings' mission by investing in the people who make its teaching, research, and service excellence possible by strengthening the school's culture of continuous learning, professional fulfillment, and community wellbeing.

Education and Experience:

  • Advanced degree in organizational development, human resources, higher education administration, public health, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated success designing and implementing faculty or staff development programs in a university or similarly complex organization.
  • Experience working collaboratively with human resources, faculty and staff affairs, or other administrative offices to align professional development initiatives with institutional policies and goals.
  • Experience conducting needs assessments and using survey or focus group data to inform and evaluate programming.
  • Familiarity with UNC-Chapel Hill systems and policies, including Interfolio, Carolina Talent, ConnectCarolina, and HR career banding processes.
  • Experience facilitating trainings or workshops on topics such as leadership, communication, supervision, or well-being.
  • Demonstrated ability to build partnerships across functional areas, fostering trust and mutual respect.
  • Capacity to work effectively in an environment that values shared governance, transparency, and collaboration.
  • Ability to inspire engagement and a sense of shared purpose among faculty and staff.
  • Competence in collecting, analyzing, and interpreting data to evaluate the effectiveness of professional development programs.
  • Strategic thinking that balances immediate needs with long-term planning and sustainability.
  • High emotional intelligence, strong listening skills, and a solutions-oriented approach.
  • Flexibility, creativity, and the ability to navigate ambiguity in a growing, mission-driven organization.
  • Commitment to the wellbeing of the Gillings community.

Essential Skills:

  • Progressively responsible experience in professional development, organizational development, higher education administration, human resources, or related fields. Experience designing, coordinating, or assessing training and development programs for diverse professional audiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to design and implement professional and leadership development initiatives that align with institutional goals and resource constraints.
  • Demonstrated experience building trust and collaborating across levels of an academic organization
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills; ability to facilitate meetings, workshops, and difficult conversations with diplomacy and clarity.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple priorities, track outcomes, and ensure timely follow-through.
  • Ability to identify needs, evaluate programs, and use data to inform decisions and demonstrate impact.
  • Demonstrated judgment and professionalism in handling sensitive personnel and institutional matters.
  • Ability to work effectively in a decentralized environment, partnering with various leaders and offices to ensure alignment of career development programs and policies.
