Job Summary
The proactive Recycling and Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) Coordinator is responsible for planning, implementing, and maintaining college-wide recycling, waste reduction, and related EHS support programs. This position performs firsthand recycling duties alongside their team while also coordinating daily operations, managing vendor relationships, and supervising part-time staff. The coordinator promotes sustainability, ensures compliance with safety and environmental standards, and works collaboratively with Facilities management, faculty, staff, students, and the community to achieve departmental and institutional goals.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Leads by example and works directly with the recycling crew to complete daily recycling and waste reduction tasks at all Salt Lake Community College (SLCC) campuses. This includes hands-on work such as collecting, sorting, loading, and transporting recyclable materials.
- Participates in physical labor, problem-solving, and team coordination.
- Performs manual tasks, operate recycling equipment, and support the team in meeting operational needs.
- Assigns daily work, trains and evaluates part-time recycling employees, and ensures that safety procedures and college standards are followed.
- Works with the Secretary to compile, track, and report monthly and annual recycling data, including commodity totals and vendor information.
- Manages vendor relationships, schedule recycling pickups, negotiate prices, and ensure timely removal of materials such as cardboard, aluminum, paper, and metals.
- Coordinates secure document shredding across campuses, ensuring document security, accurate recordkeeping, and receipt of certified destruction documentation.
- Maintains an accurate inventory of recycling bins, supplies, and equipment across all campuses, ensuring that bins are labeled, clean, and meet College appearance standards.
- Conducts market analysis to determine fair pricing for recyclable commodities and make recommendations for vendor selection to maximize efficiency and recycling revenue.
- In collaboration with the EHS Manager, the coordinator assists with small-scale hazardous materials handling and storage, ensuring safe practices and regulatory compliance.
- Oversees used oil and antifreeze recycling programs for automotive and technical training areas, test waste oil as required, and coordinate vendor removal.
- Works with the College's commercial driver to coordinate recycling roll-off pickups and manage scrap metal recycling operations.
- Educates and engages faculty, staff, and students on recycling and sustainability programs, provides tours and presentations, and works with College marketing to promote environmental awareness and recycling efforts.
- Ensures a safe and professional work environment, supports compliance with OSHA, EPA, and SLCC policies, and assists with special projects or sustainability audits in collaboration with other departments.
- Assists with snow removal operations during winter months as part of Facilities support.
- May be assigned to help during snow events to ensure campus safety and accessibility.
- Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge Skills & Abilities
- Knowledge of federal and state policies and procedures in relation to current recycling practices and solid waste reduction strategies.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Google Drive.
- Strong organizational skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Excellent customer service skills that include working with others in person and through phone and email correspondence.
- Ability to collaborate with administration, faculty, staff, students, and the community in order to achieve the objectives of the Facilities department and SLCC.
- Ability to prioritize, multi-task, and meet deadlines in order to best achieve daily, weekly, and monthly work assignments.
- Ability to be a self-starter requiring minimal supervision.
- Ability to accurately compile and maintain statistical data.
- Must be able to work inside and outside in all types of weather conditions, year round, with possible night and/or weekend work.
- Ability to bend, stand, crouch, twist, stoop, push, reach, and safely lift 75 pounds on a regular basis.
- Ability to become licensed by SLCC to operate multiple forklifts.
- Ability to find the best solutions for problems.
- Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment.
- Strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills with the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Supervise, train, and motivate part-time staff while actively performing recycling duties is essential.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, and the use of work order and time management systems, such as Sprocket, is essential.
- Ability to work indoors and outdoors year-round and safely perform manual labor in varying conditions.
- Strong skills in data tracking, vendor coordination, and project management are critical, as is dedication, and teamwork throughout the College community.
- Ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of people with a variety of abilities and backgrounds, to maintain good working relationships across the College.
- Ability to work with all groups from a variety of academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds, and with community college students, faculty, and staff, including those with disabilities.
Minimum qualifications
- Associate's degree in Environmental Science, Business Management, Public Administration, Environmental Studies, or a related discipline.
- Two (2) years of paid, full-time experience in recycling, sustainability, or waste minimization.
OR
- Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Business Management, Public Administration, Environmental Studies, or a related discipline.
Trade off 1:1 in experience/education requirement. Equivalent experience in recycling, sustainability, or waste minimization may substitute for formal education.
Part time experience may be considered on a prorated basis.
- Must have a valid driver's license, or the ability to acquire one.
- Forklift certification, or the ability to obtain certification through SLCC within six months.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience supervising part-time staff or coordinating recycling and environmental programs.
- Knowledge of hazardous materials handling, sustainability education, and vendor management.
