Job Duties:
The Facilities Planning & Management Department in the Division of Finance and Administrative Affairs at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater seeks a Custodial Services Assistant Supervisor (FP016).
The Custodial Services Assistant Supervisor works under the direction of the Custodial Services Program Manager and assists in the development, scheduling, oversight, training, administration and supervision of operational work plans and custodial staff for Facilities Planning & Management. This position guides the work of a team of custodians, lead workers, University Staff Temporary Employees (USTE's) and student workers to ensure cleanliness, orderliness and safety in academic and support buildings and assists with planning and implementation of facility emergency response policies and procedures. This position will order and maintain building supplies and provide preventative and corrective custodial equipment care. This position is listed as a level 1 for risk of exposure to blood borne pathogens. Based upon operational need for additional custodial coverage at University events, occasional overtime may be required and changes to the schedule may occur, this may include evenings and weekends.
This is a first-shift position with the normal working hours of Monday-Friday 5:00 am-1:00 pm.
Responsibilities:
A. Assist in development, scheduling, oversight, training, administration, and supervision of operational work plans and custodial staff
- Serve as role model for the unit and ensure delivery of exemplary customer service when dealing with students, staff, faculty, and community members.
- Provide training and support for custodians, lead workers, USTE and student workers.
- Assign job tasks, coordinate work schedules, and inspect the work of custodians, USTE and student workers to meet operational goals and guidelines.
- Evaluate custodial practices and procedures to monitor and improve the effectiveness and efficiency of the staff and make recommendations to the Custodial Services Program Manager.
- Assist in developing unit standards, evaluating operational efficiency, and recommending improvements and changes to the Custodial Services Program Manager.
- Assist in recruiting and interviewing full time, USTE and student applicants.
- Approve and maintain time records of staff including vacation and leave use.
- Enter and approve time sheet entries.
- Enforce University and department policies.
- Manage, assign, schedule and complete work requests through the Department's work order management system (CMMS).
- Evaluate unit equipment needs; help maintain life cycle replacement program and make recommendations for equipment replacement.
- Perform regular inspections of buildings and evaluate performance of custodial staff. Coach employees in the continuous improvement of their performance and prepare formal performance evaluations per University guidelines.
- Communicate regularly and thoroughly with direct reports, Custodial Services Program Manager, Facilities leadership, other unit Managers, and custodial staff.
- Assists with planning and implementation of facility emergency and hazardous responds policies and procedures.
B. Maintain custodial equipment, order supplies and maintain inventory, and perform routine laundry duties
- Perform routine preventative maintenance tasks on custodial equipment.
- Order and maintain shop supplies and repair parts as needed. Determine repair cost effectiveness on equipment and source needed parts from vendors or from University Stores, if available.
- Order cleaning supplies and paper products from University Stores and maintain adequate inventory levels.
- Collect laundry from buildings. Wash and dry laundry per guidelines and deliver clean laundry back to buildings.
C. Perform custodial work
- Perform routine custodial work (including but not limited to dusting, restroom cleaning, vacuuming and floor care, waste and recycling removal) in assigned areas as directed.
- Plan and coordinate custodial activities, special work projects and events to be performed around building occupancy to minimize disruption.
- Participate in scheduled and/or emergency overtime work in various campus buildings.
- Hand shovel, scrape, and apply snow and ice melting chemicals to ramps, stairs and sidewalks.
D. Perform miscellaneous tasks as assigned
- Respond to trouble calls of both a custodial and maintenance nature in buildings during and after normal business hours.
- Troubleshoot, escalate and document issues according to established policies and procedures.
- Assist with moving and hauling furniture and equipment.
- Move, set up and tear down tables and chairs for various campus events.
- Other duties as assigned.

Key Job Responsibilities:
- Documents and reports repairs, violations, and pest control needs
- Utilizes basic equipment and supplies to clean assigned facility areas and remove waste and recyclables
- Maintains clean and clear walkways to ensure they are free of debris, litter, snow, and ice
- Assists in the development, scheduling, inspection, and supervision of operational work plans and/or staff for an assigned unit
- Monitors and secures facility interior and exterior entrances, reports issues to appropriate entities
- Assists with planning and implementation of facility emergency and hazardous response policies and procedures
- Maintains organization of supply areas and equipment, documents inventory, and requests additional supplies as needed
Department: Facilities Planning & Management

Required Qualifications:
- H.S. Diploma
- Prior experience performing custodial activities, housekeeping or facilities maintenance in a professional setting
- Ability to attain UW System driver authorization within first week of employment Driver Authorization
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
Preferred Qualifications:
- Ability to communicate to staff in English and Spanish
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Ability to have and maintain a valid Driver's License meeting the criteria for operating a university vehicle
- Ability to perform a variety of daily, periodic and seasonal duties that require bending, standing for long periods, stooping, kneeling and walking significant distances
- Knowledge of custodial practices including cleaning chemicals, their effectiveness and their safe use
- Knowledge of custodial equipment, including their capabilities, repair and maintenance needs, and their safe use
- Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety standards/precautions pertaining to custodial operations and the ability to read and follow recommendations
- Knowledge of standard business software (e.g. Microsoft Office Suite), and the ability to learn and comprehend software programs
- Ability to work collaboratively with co-workers, staff, and students
- Ability to interact respectfully with people from diverse socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds
- Willingness and ability to be an active participant in following applicable safety rules and regulations including necessary training and drills
- Ability to work independently and prioritize workload
- Ability to work overtime hours for snow removal or other special events as needed
- Ability to grasp, lift or carry materials weighing up to 50 pounds
