JOB SUMMARY

The Department of Public Administration is seeking to hire part-time instructors to teach within our NASPAA-accredited MPA program and our newly created Bachelor of Arts in Public Service. All of our MPA courses are taught online, using the Canvas and Zoom platforms. The MPA program offers seven core courses (History and Theory; Research Methods; Budgeting; Human Resources, Public Management; Policy Analysis; and Strategic Planning) and 5 concentration courses. The department offers concentrations in Leadership, Public Financial Management, Non-Profit Management, Human Resource Management, and Community Planning and Management. The Department has an existing California County Cohort program serving students from across the state of CA. We are seeking both seasoned public service practitioners and academics who want to engage with and teach the next generation of public service leaders. Applicants should review our course offerings before applying to indicate the courses they are qualified to teach.

TYPICAL ACTIVITIES

Qualified candidates must demonstrate a commitment to excellence in teaching and mentoring a diverse student population, and to working effectively with students, staff, and colleagues in the Department. Faculty in the MPA program teach remotely, using both Canvas and Zoom. Around 75% of our courses are taught synchronously, from 7:00 PM to 9:45 PM, Monday through Thursday using the Zoom platform. The other 25% are taught asynchronously. Faculty who wish to teach in the async mode must engage with the University's online course development staff to build a high-quality course shell before courses are offered. While not expected, many of our current part-time faculty attend department meetings and events, graduation, and serve as mentors to our students.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Applicants must possess at least a master's or a law degree. We generally prefer applicants with professional leadership experience in public service fields but will consider those who hold a doctorate in a relevant field with teaching and research experience.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master's, Law, or Doctoral degree in a relevant field

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Evidence of exemplary graduate-level teaching in an online mode is preferred.
  • Evidence of scholarly activity, publication, and innovation is valued. Evidence of exemplary graduate-level teaching and leadership experience at the program level is preferred and should be noted in the application.

Please submit:

2. Cover Letter that includes:
  a. A brief statement of your teaching interest/philosophy
