Development Officer

The Development Officer is responsible for implementing and coordinating comprehensive fundraising and/or engagement programs aimed at identifying, cultivating, and securing gifts in conjunction with the objectives and strategies of ASU Foundation (ASUF) on behalf of their assigned area(s). In partnership with unit development directors, ASU Enterprise Partners, and university faculty and staff, this position will identify opportunities and develop engagement strategies for securing and maintaining donors across the spectrum of our constituency.

What you'll do

  • Identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward individual donors, securing philanthropic investments in the $1,000 - $10,000 range, with a focus on long-term engagement.
  • Independently manage and grow Signal Society (Arizona PBS's membership society for donors contributing $1,000 - $9,999), developing strategies to engage members and encourage continued and increased support.
  • Create and implement stewardship plans for Signal Society members, ensuring timely follow-up, recognition, and meaningful engagement opportunities.
  • Collaborate with the executive director of development to strategize on discovery, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of mid-level donors, with an emphasis on identifying prospects with potential for major gifts ($10,000+) that can be introduced to directors of development.
  • Work within the ASU Foundation's Salesforce donor database, ensuring accurate and timely entry of contact reports, gift activity, donor interactions, and prospect movement.
  • Partner with research and prospect management to analyze donor data and move qualified donors into the major gifts pipeline.
  • Support and execute donor engagement events such as studio tours, program screenings, cultivation receptions, and the annual Arizona PBS luncheon.
  • Coordinate administrative activities related to donor stewardship and renewals including solicitation mailings, renewals, acknowledgments, reporting, and list management.
  • Assist with special projects, donor communications, and cross-functional initiatives under the direction of the executive director of development.
  • Perform other development-related duties as assigned.

  • Exceptional interpersonal skills and the ability to interact effectively with academic leadership, faculty, prospects, donors, and/or volunteers in a wide range of roles
  • Ability to conduct research, gather data, analyze information, and prepare effective, accurate, and timely reports and other documents to support development objectives
  • Database management skills
  • Ability to supervise and train employees, to include organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments
  • Ability to exercise good judgment, to demonstrate an understanding of ethics related to development activities, and to use discretion in interactions with donors, prospects, volunteers, and others
  • Ability to foster effective working relationships within a team environment
  • Community relations skills and the ability to communicate and work effectively within a diverse community
  • Program planning and leadership skills
  • Ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality and responsibility regarding information related to Foundation and University business and confidential prospect information
  • Highly developed verbal and written communication skills and the ability to present effectively to small and large groups
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and comfortable working in donor/prospect computer database systems
  • Ability to represent the institution well and possess an advocate's belief in the vision of ASU as the New American University
  • If this position is assigned to the Athletics Department, either administratively or functionally, compliance with all NCAA rules and regulations is required

Relevant qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field, or currently enrolled in bachelor's degree program
  • One (1) to three (3) years of successful development experience
  • Demonstrated ability in securing major grants and gifts from individuals, corporations, foundations, and other private funding sources
  • Demonstrated ability in planning and implementing long- and short-range development initiatives in conjunction with strategic planning processes
  • Demonstrated organizational skills and experience in managing events and other complex activities in support of development objectives

Preferred education and experience

  • Advanced degree
  • Experience working in Salesforce and Workday
  • One (1) to three (3) years of successful fundraising experience or transferrable experiences working with donors and prospects in higher education or athletics for applicable roles

Preferred Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of fundraising techniques including proposal development, prospect identification, fund solicitation, database management, donor tracking, and social networking and marketing tools in higher education
