Director of Development, McCain Institute

The McCain Institute, a part of Arizona State University, seeks a full-time Director of Development to support the Institute's fundraising and development efforts. Working closely with and reporting to the Senior Director of Development, the Director of Development will solicit and secure philanthropic gifts and participate in the development, implementation, and coordination of comprehensive fund-raising strategies to support the McCain Institute's programmatic activities, ensuring sustained financial growth and donor engagement.

The Development team works across the institution with senior leadership and program teams to secure the diverse funding required to accomplish organizational and programmatic objectives. The Director of Development must possess a deep understanding of the philanthropic landscape, including emerging trends, donor engagement strategies, and best practices in fundraising. This role requires extensive experience working with a diverse range of donors, including individual philanthropists, institutional funders, and corporate partners, to secure private philanthropic support for nonprofit organizations. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of cultivating and stewarding donor relationships, developing high-impact fundraising initiatives, and successfully securing significant financial contributions that advance the organization's mission.

This position is based in Washington, DC, and is eligible for a hybrid work schedule.

What you'll do

  • Under the guidance of and in coordination with the McCain Institute's Senior Director of Development, solicit and secure philanthropic gifts from new donors to support the McCain Institute's programmatic activities, ensuring sustained financial growth and donor engagement.
  • Identify, build, cultivate, and manage a portfolio of new donors growing a personal fundraising goal of at least $2M annually in accordance with performance metrics.
  • Participate in the development, implementation, and coordination of comprehensive fund-raising strategies for both existing and new donors.
  • Collaborate with the McCain Institute's program teams to develop compelling, fundable programs by articulating programmatic vision into clear program narratives and detailed budgets for donor presentations.
  • Develop written proposals, impact reports and storytelling, strategic plans, budgets, and other materials needed to make McCain Institute programs as accessible and attractive to potential donors as possible.
  • Support programmatic teams in pursuing charitable grant opportunities by assisting in the development of grant materials, including narratives and budgets, to ensure successful submissions.
  • Working in partnership with ASU Foundation, participate in the development and implementation of the Legacy Giving (Planned Giving) program, including crafting donor communications and engagement strategies.
  • Secure sponsorships for and engage with donors at the McCain Institute events.
  • In partnership with the communications team, participate in planning social media fundraising campaigns.
  • In partnership with the Research and Prospect Management team, compile and prepare confidential financial reports regarding potential partners, donors, and prospects.
  • Use the ASUF prospect management and tracking system (i.e., Salesforce) to record and coordinate contacts and proposals.
  • Participate, as a member of the ASUF development team and serve as a resource to development colleagues.
  • Manage projects with moderate oversight; depending on area(s) of responsibility, may serve as a project manager for some complex, multilayered, university-wide proposals aimed at raising the higher gifts for a university campaign.
  • Undertake and manage other duties or projects as assigned with moderate direction; and
  • Other duties as assigned.

What you'll need

  • Exceptional interpersonal skills and the ability to interact effectively with academic leadership, faculty, prospects, donors, and/or volunteers in a wide range of roles.
  • Complex problem-solving skills coupled with the ability to conduct research, gather data, analyze information, and prepare effective, accurate, and timely reports and other documents to support development objectives.
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of database management.
  • Ability to successfully lead, coach and guide a team to achieve desired result.
  • Ability to inquire about and understand organizational interests and needs, and determine how to persuade or market to that organization with compelling benefits.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment, to demonstrate an understanding of ethics related to development activities, and to use discretion in interactions with donors, prospects, volunteers, and others.
  • Ability to foster effective working relationships within a team environment.
  • Community relations skills and the ability to communicate and work effectively within a diverse community.
  • Knowledge of fundraising techniques including proposal development, prospect identification, program planning, fund solicitation, database management, donor tracking, and social networking and marketing tools.
  • Highly developed verbal and written communication skills and the ability to present effectively to small and large groups.
  • Ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality and responsibility regarding information related to Foundation and University business and confidential prospect information.
  • Ability to develop knowledge of, respect for, and skills to engage with those of other cultures and backgrounds.
  • Ability to represent the institution well and possess an advocate's belief in the vision of ASU as the New American University.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and comfortable working in donor/prospect computer database systems.

Relevant qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Five (5) years of successful professional development and/or fundraising experience in non-profit sector.
  • Or any equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.
  • Documented success in personally implementing sophisticated, multi-year cultivation strategies that use a relationship-building and moves management approach leading to successful gift closure.
  • Demonstrated ability in securing major grants and gifts from individuals, corporations, foundations, and other private funding sources for non-profit organizations.

Preferred education and experience

  • Advanced degree.
  • Five (5) to seven (7) years of years of successful professional development and/or fundraising experience in non-profit sector, preferably in the space of democracy, human rights and leadership.
  • Experience working in Salesforce and Workday.
