Definition
Creates and produces a wide variety of digital media materials in support of public relations activities used on social media platforms, video sharing websites, live video/web streaming, podcasts, presentations, and websites.
Typical Duties
- Creates and produces a wide variety of digital media used on social media platforms, video sharing websites, live video/web streaming, podcasts, presentations, and websites enhancing accessibility utilizing media technology.
- Produces, edits, and compresses audio and video for multiple delivery formats.
- Develops benchmark criteria to measure the effectiveness of social media messaging and implements improvements as required.
- Interfaces with public relations staff and vendors to implement branding campaign and public relations goals and strategies using social media.
- Converts digital materials, photographs, illustrations, audio and video files, and other materials into interactive online and offline content including alternative media formats by using various multimedia software applications, development tools, and equipment.
- Trains administrators and other staff in the use of various multimedia software, web conferencing software, hardware, smart room systems, and audio/video production equipment based on their specific needs and goals.
- Conducts on-going evaluations of media technology and assists administrators and other staff in the selection and use of software, hardware, and audio/video production and editing equipment to design and develop digital media.
- Monitors and maintains social media activity on various platforms as directed on a daily basis and responds accurately to social media questions, photographs, videos, messaging, or directs them to the appropriate department.
- Assists with developing initial social media messages alerting administrators, faculty, staff and students of activities involving District locations and the surrounding community.
- Monitors and reviews social media messaging, postings, and tweeting; and removes or tracks inappropriate social media messaging, photos, and videos from Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, and related social media platforms and communications.
- Maintains multimedia equipment and ensures their efficient and effective operation.
- Provides photo and/or video coverage of special events and posts photos and/or videos on social media platforms.
- Sets-up, operates, and breaks down audio visual equipment for events and meetings.
- Sets-up and monitors equipment for web conferences and podcasts.
- Performs routine and preventative maintenance and basic troubleshooting to make minor repairs and adjustments on a variety of media equipment.
- Reports smart room equipment and system malfunctions to information technology staff.
- Creates and maintains a media technology toolkit for administrators and other staff that includes operating instructions, training materials and manuals, graphic design work, logos, and video libraries.
- Organizes and lays out the content of digital publications and makes editorial suggestions to improve and clarify the text.
- May serve as a monitor in the Board Room for in person Board of Trustee meetings and assist District staff and Board members by familiarizing them with the use, operation, purpose, and availability of media equipment and materials, including computerized smart room systems.
- Performs related duties as assigned.
Distinguishing Characteristics
A Digital Media Specialist Creates and produces a wide variety of digital media materials in support of public relations activities used on social media platforms, video sharing websites, live video/web streaming, podcasts, presentations, and websites. Proficiency in various multimedia and video editing software applications and development tools and social media platforms is an integral part of the duties of this class.
Supervision
General supervision is received from a classified administrator. No supervision is exercised.
Class Qualifications
Knowledge of:
- Media technology tools, strategies, and resources
- Principles and techniques of multimedia design
- Basic marketing and public relations principles and techniques
- Principles of copywriting and editing
- Social media platforms systems such as Facebook, YouTube, and Instagram
- Current trends in the production and post-production of digital media technology
- Operation and application of a wide variety of multimedia software and development tools such as Adobe Premier, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Acrobat Pro, Apple iMovie, Apple Final Cut Pro, CCC Confer, Zoom, etc.
- Operation and use of a wide variety of technical equipment such as hand-held digital cameras, web cameras, Apple iPhones, Apple iPads, panel control systems, video data projectors, digital presenters, and microphones
- Presentation software such as Microsoft PowerPoint
- Basic web design and current web streaming principles, methods, and techniques
- Basic website usability concepts and section 508 compliance standards for website design and video captioning, to ensure accessibility to individuals with disabilities
- Basic operation of computer operating systems
- Basic trademark and copyright law and fair use practices for education
- Recordkeeping procedures
- Principles of training
Ability to:
- Independently produce a wide variety of digital media used for websites, social media platforms, presentations, live video/web streaming, video sharing websites, podcasts, and/or other materials enhancing accessibility
- Produce, edit, and compress audio and video for multiple delivery formats
- Organize and coordinate social media messaging related to public relations activities and events
- Produces web graphics and other digital media materials
- Diagnose and resolve routine problems related to audio visual equipment and smart room systems
- Organize, prepare, and conduct training for administrators and other staff on the use of multimedia software and technical equipment
- Prioritize and manage multiple tasks, projects, and demands to meet schedules and timelines
- Work effectively with a diverse pool of administrators, staff, vendors, and the public
- Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
- Use proper spelling, punctuation, and grammar
- Keep accurate and detailed records
- Travel to off-site events
- Learn the characteristics of new multimedia software and equipment, social media platforms, and update technical skills to adapt to changing technology
Entrance Qualifications
Education and Experience:
A. A bachelor's degree from a recognized college or university, preferably with a major in multimedia, information technology, graphic design, public relations, or a related field.
AND
Two years of recent, full-time, paid experience in the creation and production of a wide variety of digital media materials including video production and editing. Experience with digital marketing and social media platforms in an educational environment is desirable.
OR
B. An associate degree or its equivalent from a recognized college or university, preferably with a major in multimedia, information technology, graphic design, public relations, or a related field.
AND
Four years of recent, full-time, paid experience in the creation and production a wide variety of digital media materials including video production and editing. Experience with digital marketing and social media platforms in an educational environment is desirable.
