Director, Skilled Trades

Position Summary

The Director is responsible for the leadership, oversight, development, and assessment of comprehensive workforce development programs in the areas of skilled trades for the School of Continuing Education and Workforce Development (CEWD). This position includes oversight of learning management systems and curriculum development of all skilled trades continuing education and training, supervision and evaluation of staff and part-time faculty, community and employer outreach, partnership development, and compliance with regulatory agencies, bodies and standards. The Director is also responsible for the oversight and management of the Clauson Center for Innovation and Skilled Trades (CCIT) to include setting the strategic direction for the programming in the CCIT in alignment with the strategic plan and expectations of stakeholders, generating interest in CCIT’s programs through strategic outreach and engagement activities, and ensuring that instructional lab spaces are well maintained, safe, and operate efficiently. The Director leads strategic planning efforts to establish goals, enhance student access and program outcomes, and promote the continued growth and revenue generation of CEWD.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

Program Management: Provides leadership and direction for the development of program enhancement and implementation of innovative continuing education and contract training based on assessed business community and local/regional industry and labor market needs in the areas of skilled trades and transportation. Works with associations such as Associated Builders and Contractors and Independent Electrical Contractors to establish partnerships that generate revenue for the college and provide a career pathway for students. Ensures that programming is inclusive and accessible in the following areas of responsibility: apprenticeship (electrical, HVAC, low voltage, and plumbing), pre-apprenticeship (electrical, HVAC, low voltage, mechanical tech, and carpentry), welding, and diesel technician.

Internal and External Collaboration: Participates as an active member of the CEWD Director's team to implement the school's shared vision and strategic plans. Collaborates with other AACC department staff to promote a unified approach to program delivery. Serves on college-wide committees to further the goals of the institution. Liaises with related business and community organizations on behalf of AACC to build strategic partnerships for program currency and employment opportunities for students. Assumes a lead role in the planning, marketing, and execution of events designed to increase awareness in the community of the programming offered at the CCIT.

Enrollment Management and Learning Outcomes Assessment: Assures that courses and programs follow best practices including identifying and achieving specific measurable outcomes and college competencies. Creates strategies based on results to continuously direct course development, improvement and promote student achievement. Oversees the ongoing enrollment analysis of courses, programs and facilities using data driven reports and environmental scanning tools. Develops 3-5 year program schedules to maximize student recruitment and retention leading to credit pathways. Directs the implementation of strategies to achieve departmental and school enrollment and revenue goals. Assures instructional environments are regularly assessed and perceived as high quality. Oversees the registration of 500+ contract based apprenticeship students each fiscal year.

Facilities Management: Ensures that the instructional lab spaces at the CCIT are maintained to the highest standards of safety, cleanliness and functionality. Acts as the final point of contact for emergencies that would directly impact the safety of students, staff, and faculty. Oversees the development of a preventative maintenance plan for all equipment. Ensures that all CCIT labs comply with OSHA and state requirements for safe equipment operation. Monitors all service repair and work orders. Facilitates the acquisition and sunsetting of all lab equipment including quotes and liaising with BFRO, IIT, and Facilities.

Strategic Planning: Works with the Dean and Assistant Deans to set a strategic plan for the CCIT that meets the needs of the college, students and other key stakeholders. Regularly monitors and assess the metrics set forth in the strategic plan and adjusts programming and services, as necessary to support the Center’s success.

Accessibility: Ensures that all instructional materials comply with established accessibility standards to support equitable access for all learners. Responsibilities include verifying that digital content remains consistently accessible upon each download, ensuring all video materials feature accurate captions and audio descriptions, and confirming that PowerPoint presentations and other visual content are fully optimized with appropriate alt text and formatting for users with disabilities.

Supervision: Determines roles and responsibilities of departmental personnel and oversees recruitment, hiring, supervision and evaluation of faculty and staff. Fosters a collaborative and supportive work environment by establishing an annual plan to continually increase the professional knowledge, skills and abilities of departmental staff and faculty.

Budget and Fiscal Management: Oversees preparation and ongoing analysis of multiple types of departmental budgets (e.g., operating, enterprise, grants, etc.) and enrollment projections to achieve department and school goals. Other duties as assigned by the Assistant Deans, Dean, or the Provost/Vice President for Learning.

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in business, education, or related field.
  • Five years of experience managing diverse workforce development programs, budgets, staff, and faculty.
  • Five years of experience in developing strategic partnerships among organizations including the public sector, institutions of higher education, and the business community.
  • Three years of experience in fiscal planning, analysis and budget management to meet stated goals.
  • Strong organizational skills, including the ability to interact effectively and tactfully with diverse populations (students, administrators, faculty/staff, professional organizations, business, and the general public).
  • Experience using the MS Office Suite and virtual meeting platforms such as Teams/Zoom at the intermediate level.
  • Demonstrated commitment to creating an inclusive environment and the ability to deal tactfully with all internal and external constituents.
  • Ability to function with minimal supervision with attention to details and deadlines including the ability to work a flexible schedule (including evenings and weekends) and travel to accommodate the needs of the department.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in a community college setting.
  • Experience in working with relevant trade related organizations, local, county, or state agencies on pre-apprenticeship or apprenticeship programs.
  • Experience in facilities operations and maintenance.

Salary Range: $103,737-$129,671

Hours Per Week: 40

Position Type: Full-Time Staff, Exempt

Work Mode: This position requires regular in-person presence on campus and at alternative locations, depending on class schedule and other assigned duties.
