Educational Development Specialist

Wayne State University is searching for an experienced Educational Development Specialist at its Detroit campus location.

Essential Functions
- Provide consultation to faculty and instructional staff in the design and structure of instructional solutions for inclusive, engaging, and collaborative learning in all modalities, including individual and group consultations related to course design, redesign, and development of clear course standards and objectives, including outcomes assessment. (20%)
- Conceptualizes, creates, and delivers educational development workshop sessions (both pedagogical and technical) in a variety of modalities and formats aimed at assisting faculty members as they develop engaging, interactive, and student-centered courses. (20%)
- Develop and disseminate professional quality accessible materials, documentation, modules, training, workshops and resources related to learning theory, pedagogy, evidence-based teaching methods, classroom assessment techniques, educational technology, and quality assurance. (20%)
- Participate in campus-wide teaching and learning initiatives that encourage the use of emerging technology tools and applications in the development and implementation of innovative, student-centered learning environments. (10%)
- Define, implement, and coordinate projects and related research with faculty, and disseminate results and findings through reports, publications, and presentations, as appropriate, including the presentation of research and effective practices through workshops, conferences, consultations, and website resources. (10%)
- Update and improve one's own knowledge, skills and attitudes pertaining to the instructional design and quality process, faculty development, new models of instruction, emerging technologies and related fields. (5%)
- Collaborate with all stakeholders to support the established and maintain a quality assurance process for continuous improvement of courses and programs. (5%)
- Assist with special projects as assigned. (5%)
- Perform other related duties as assigned. (5%)
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
- Education: Master's degree in education, instructional design, business, communications or another related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Doctorate preferred.
- Experience: Minimum 3 years' experience consulting with faculty and facilitating workshops, learning communities, and/or faculty/professional development. Extensive knowledge in the application of adult learning theories and innovative instructional design methods. Experience designing, implementing, and conducting faculty development programs. Experience designing courses in Learning Management Systems (Canvas). Experience with course syllabus development. Successful online and/or hybrid teaching experience in higher education.
- Preferred Experience: Experience with editing and proofreading educational materials. Experience with quality metrics (Quality Matters, OLC, etc.). Quality Matters Peer Reviewer certification. Technical writing and/or materials development skills.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Course Design: Knowledge of current course design, assessment, and teaching strategies in a higher education environment. Experience in collaborating with faculty to develop and implement learning outcomes and use analytical tools to identify the pedagogical needs of courses. Experience applying instructional design methodology and principles to the design, delivery, and evaluation of courses in all modalities. Experience utilizing backward course design and universal design for learning. Advanced skills in instructional design, development, and implementation. Knowledge of course design principles and practices.
- Technical: Ability to develop products that comply with ADA accessibility standards and techniques, as they pertain to online materials within higher education. Demonstrated experience and competence with instructional technologies, such as the Canvas LMS, Zoom web conferencing and lecture capture. Proficient in the use of MS Office Suite including Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, and Excel. Proficient skills in Microsoft Teams.
- Interpersonal: Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain effective professional relationships required. Ability to initiate and foster teamwork by maintaining a positive, cooperative, productive work atmosphere with a diverse population and those from various cultural backgrounds. Demonstrated ability to handle confidential information, exercise tact, sound judgment, diplomacy and discretion. Ability to interact with humility, empathy and patience required.
- Planning/Organizational: Demonstrated excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to set and assign priorities, to coordinate multiple assignments with fluctuating and time-sensitive deadlines. Strong organizational and file (physical and virtual) management skills, as well as project management skills. Ability to prioritize, execute tasks, and meet deadlines in a busy environment.
- Communication: Ability to sense others' feelings and how they see things; taking an active interest in the concerns of others, pick up cues to what's being felt and thought and sense unspoken emotions and respond accordingly. Demonstrated ability to effectively consult with faculty and administrators from across the disciplines and with both technical and non-technical audiences. Interprets and communicates information, ideas, and instructions clearly, accurately, and persuasively both verbally and in writing including materials intended for distribution. Exceptional ability to effectively communicate processes, explain terms, concepts and technology in a clear and understandable manner, visually, verbally and in writing. Ability to independently author and review articles for peer-reviewed publications. Demonstrated ability to solicit, accept, and provide constructive feedback.
