Job Description

Montgomery College, Takoma Park/Silver Spring Campus, has an immediate need for a part-time Instructional Associate in the Writing, Reading, and Language Center (WRLC). The standard work schedule is Monday through Thursday (3:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.) and one virtual day Saturday (9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.) or Sunday (10:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m.). Based on the needs of the department, flexibility with the schedule may be required. This is a bargaining, non-exempt, grade 25 position. For non-exempt positions, you are not eligible to work a secondary job at Montgomery College. Under supervision and/or direction, this position provides services to students and/or faculty in support of the College's academic programs and commitment to community engagement. The incumbent will work with students, in-person and virtually, to tutor and demonstrate subject matter concepts and guide students to reinforce faculty teaching. Incumbents may help students with course work, assignments, and associated study/learning activities. This position will also collaborate with faculty in multiple disciplines to foster efficient student engagement, retention, and completion, and may supervise student assistants. The set up, installation, and maintenance of software used in a learning center, as well as some record keeping tasks, may also be required.

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Tutor students one-to-one and in small groups, both in-person and online, in writing, reading, speaking, and English as a second language across all disciplines.
  • Provide academic support to students by reviewing course assignments, guides, lesson plans, texts and learning resources; explaining and discussing subjects and learning materials; and advising students on learning/study techniques.
  • Develop and conduct student orientations and subject matter workshops.
  • Assist students in utilizing learning software and other resource materials by explaining and demonstrating the use of such materials, selecting and/or recommending such materials, depending on student need, answering student questions regarding the use of such materials, and correcting software problems if needed
  • Provide software support, training and instruction to staff, faculty and student assistants.
  • Prepare and conduct workshops for faculty and students, and assist with planning, organizing, advertising and record keeping of workshops.
  • Create marketing materials such as flyers, posters, e-mail announcements, brochures, and Inside MC Online articles.
  • Compile, create, and update educational/instructional materials to contribute to the resource collection and ensure consistency of service.
  • Participate in team meetings and keep current with strategies in learning center pedagogy. This can be achieved by attending conferences, engaging in professional development and conducting research.
  • Maintains the department’s official web site.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in English or a related field.
  • Three (3) years of related experience.
  • The equivalent combination of education, training, certification and/or experience that provides the required knowledge and expertise to perform the essential functions of the job may be considered.
  • Eligible applicants must currently be authorized to work in the United States and not require employer visa sponsorship

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in English, Composition/Rhetoric, Linguistics, TESOL, or a closely related academic field.
  • ESL certificate or other specialized training in teaching English as a Second Language.
  • Experience with remote tutoring practices.
  • Fluency in a second language.

Hiring Range: $28.79-$37.42 annually. Initial salary placement for new hires falls between the minimum and midpoint of the range and is based on relevant candidate experience and internal equity. The maximum salary for this position is $46.04.
