Winston-Salem State University (WSSU) is seeking a skilled and motivated Electrician to join the Facilities Maintenance team for the Department of Housing & Residence Life.

The Electrician is a critical role which will support the maintenance and repair of electrical systems within our student housing facilities, ensuring a safe, comfortable, and well-maintained environment for our students and staff. This also includes callback work if needed.

Responsibilities of the Electrician include:

  • Performing inspections of electrical system equipment and facilities to assess condition, identify maintenance needs, and recommend repair priorities
  • Installing, maintaining, and repairing secondary electrical systems and related equipment
  • Maintaining and troubleshooting electrical components such as conduit, wiring, electrical panels, breakers, switchgear, magnetic starters, disconnects, and motors
  • Troubleshoot and repair control systems, including temperature controls, regulators, humidity controllers, sensors, pneumatic control valves, and regulators
  • Completing scheduled preventive and predictive maintenance on emergency generators and automatic transfer switch gears.
  • Conducting electronic diagnostics, testing, and repairs on generator systems and related equipment.
  • Conduct routine inspections and preventative maintenance on electrical systems to avoid downtime and improve system longevity.
  • Repairing and maintaining lighting systems, including fixtures, ballasts, switches, and receptacles
  • Work with the Facilities Management team to address maintenance needs and contribute to a collaborative environment focused on improving the student living experience.
  • Respond to service requests promptly, completing work orders and ensuring all maintenance issues are resolved effectively
  • Maintaining records of repairs and maintenance performed
  • Managing work orders in Team Dynamix
  • Adhere to safety standards, building codes, and environmental regulations while performing tasks, ensuring the safety of students, staff, and the general public.
  • Support Plumbing and HVAC repair and maintenance as part of the Facilities Maintenance team to ensure proper function across student housing facilities.

Requirements and Preferences

Minimum Experience/Education:
High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. Some positions may require special licenses or certification.
Optional Guidelines:
Experience in the trade(s) areas related to the area of assignment may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.

Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education:

Education and Experience:

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in mechanical maintenance or a related field, preferably in a university or large residential setting.
  • Formal training or certifications in, electrical systems, or other mechanical trades is highly desirable.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong knowledge of electrical systems, and general mechanical maintenance.
  • Ability to troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair mechanical and electrical issues effectively.
  • Proficiency with hand tools, power tools, and diagnostic equipment used in mechanical maintenance.
  • Knowledge of safety regulations and best practices in facility maintenance.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to interact professionally with students, staff, and contractors.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds, climb ladders, and work in confined spaces.

Required License or Certification: Electrical license or certification is preferred

Key Responsibilities and Related Competencies

Knowledge - Technical (40%):

  • Perform general maintenance on Housing and Residence Life facilities, grounds, and equipment at various sites including electrical, carpentry, plumbing, masonry, and painting tasks.
  • Repair structures such as showers, floors, sinks, walls, carpets and roofs.
  • Perform minor repairs, troubleshooting electrical systems, installation of outlets, light bulbs and ballast, motors, exhaust fans, adjustment of locks on cabinets, closets, and desks.
  • Repair door hinges, cleaning plugged key slots, changing filters on ventilating, heating, and air conditioning units.
  • Assist in the testing and replacement of emergency equipment.
  • Assist in the servicing and replacement of appliances.
  • Perform weekly walk-thru to assess building conditions in assigned areas.
  • Assist in the moving and transportation of furniture and equipment.
  • Identify projects that require higher skilled crafts individual’s services. Inspect facilities to access issues of pest.
  • Escort and monitor vendors/contractors while they complete work in the residence halls.
  • Assist in the moving of students upon request of the department.
  • Assist in the cleaning of hazardous waste and materials.

Coordination - Work (20%): Develops and maintains effective relationships with others in order to encourage and support communication and teamwork. Communicates with fellow workers in a manner that allows work to be completed.

Interpersonal Skills (10%): Customer Service: Knows mission of the organization, and how own work activities impact students and the organization. Understands and responds to needs of a variety of clients. Knows the role of clients in the work environment. Listens and responds to customer needs promptly and respectfully.

Communication (10%): Clearly and concisely conveys verbal, non-verbal (sign language, body language, gestures), or written information and ideas to individuals or groups to ensure that they understand the message. Listens and responds appropriately to messages from others. Listens to instructions, asks necessary questions to complete tasks.

Safety and Health Compliance (10%): Demonstrates an understanding of and maintains conditions that ensure a healthy and safe working environment. Being aware of lockout/tagout situations and etc.

Problem Solving (10%): You should be able to intellectually solve problems based on the need of the electrical situation. Come up with a game plan on how to attack a problem with safety at the forefront.
