SUPERVISION EXERCISED: Maintainer II, Custodial Associates on shift and as assigned
General Statement of Duties: The Maintainer III, Custodial Supervisor is responsible for performing routine maintenance tasks related to the cleanliness and upkeep of university buildings and building walkways. The incumbent serves as an immediate supervisor to subordinate staff. They train Maintainer II's on the proper techniques and procedures to perform the work. The Maintainer III approaches their role with a positive attitude and sets a strong example for their subordinates. They serve as the back-up to the APA supervisor and/or maintenance working foreman in their absence. They are responsible for collaborating with the APA supervisor which includes bringing work and safety concerns to the supervisor's attention as well as ensuring work is being completed per the supervisor's direction.
Responsibilities: (E = Essential)
- (E) Serves as an immediate supervisor to subordinate staff and trains staff on proper techniques and procedures.
- (E) Serves as back-up to the maintenance working foreman or APA supervisor in their absence and as assigned. Collaborates with supervisors to ensure work is being performed well and safely. Brings items of concern to the attention of supervisors.
- (E) Cleans any/all areas of university buildings including but not limited to offices, classrooms, bedrooms, lounges, corridors, walls, floors, windows, furniture, woodwork, toilets, bathrooms, showers, locker rooms, fixtures, etc., by washing, sanitizing, waxing, buffing, sweeping, polishing, dusting, and vacuuming; meets the university's standard for cleanliness in performance of duties.
- (E) Operates powered cleaning equipment including but not limited to buffers, vacuums, and power washers, autoscrubbers.
- (E) Moves furniture and materials in accordance with proper lifting techniques, as necessary.
- (E) Reviews inventory of cleaning supplies in work area(s) and requests/attains additional supplies as needed.
- (E) Empties waste receptacles including but not limited to waste barrels, garbage cans, and recycling bins. May be responsible for operating university vehicles and disposing waste in dumpsters.
- (E) Shovels snow to maintain clear building walkways and stairs; spreads salt and/or sand as necessary.
- (E) Makes general repairs of a simple nature, including minor repairs to cleaning equipment and replacing light bulbs.
- (E) Properly secures cleaning equipment, cleaning equipment storage rooms, classrooms, offices, and buildings after use and in accordance with Facilities Operations guidelines.
- (E) May be responsible for training new Maintainer II employees from time-to-time, as assigned.
- (E) Inspects assigned work area(s) and notifies supervisor of areas or items requiring attention, such as leaking faucets, broken latches, damaged paint, etc.
- (E) Periodically inspects cleaning equipment for wear and tear; notifies supervisor of concerns.
- (E) Assists with delivering goods and moving materials when needed and as assigned.
- (E) Participates in the on-call rotation, as assigned.
- (E) Serves as designated essential personnel; responds to weather and other emergency situations as assigned.
- (E) Performs all duties safely and responsibly.
- (E) Demonstrates civility and professional, customer-service oriented behavior, worthy of emulation by other staff and students.
- (E) Responsible for contributing to the WSU Strategic Plan.

Required Qualifications:
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to understand and apply the laws, rules, regulations, policies, procedures, specifications, standards and guidelines governing assigned unit activities.
- Ability to establish and maintain harmonious working relationships with others.
- Ability to deal tactfully with others.
- Ability to stand or walk for prolonged periods of time.
- Ability to lift and carry heavy objects.

Preferred Qualifications:
- 1 - 3 years of supervisory experience.
- Strong work ethic and a willingness to learn.
- Experience in building custodial work.
- Valid scissor lift certificate, or ability to obtain one within probation period.
- Valid driving license.
Additional Information:
This is a grade 13, step 1 non-exempt, full-time (40 hours/week), benefited AFSCME position. The bi-weekly salary is $1,932.56 (annual salary is $50,246.56). The shift is Monday- Friday, 6:00am- 2:30pm.
