Reporting to the Assistant Director and Head of Access & Discovery Services and serving as a branch manager, the Fenwick Music Librarian has a dual role. First, as the liaison to the Music Department, the librarian oversees all aspects of the Music Library and its collections, providing comprehensive research and instructional support to students and faculty. Second, the librarian serves as the full liaison to the Department of Theater and Dance, supporting collection development, research, and instruction in that discipline. The Fenwick Music Librarian will have a breadth of music knowledge to support the diverse fields that engage faculty and students' research and pedagogical interests. Will supervise one library assistant and a team of student workers within the Fenwick Music Library and serves as the primary developer of the music collection. Provides research expertise, offers regular personal research sessions, and provides library instruction. Manage print and digital acquisitions in support of liaison departments. Serves as an integrated member of the music department community, attending regular departmental meetings as well as other departmental events. Maintains close communication with all liaison departments. Pursues professional development and stay abreast of best practices in the field. Leads, and serves on, library committees and teams.

Job Description

Major Areas of Responsibility

  • Manage the Fenwick Music Library and its operations
  • Manage the Music Library Assistant and student workers
  • Support faculty and student research, and provide research sessions and information literacy instruction sessions for music, theatre and dance, with a particular expertise in music
  • Build and manage the collections of the Fenwick Music Library and the collections in support of Theatre and Dance ensuring alignment with academic, library, and institutional goals; including management of budget allocations in support of liaison departments.
  • Supervise the cataloging of, and/or is capable of original cataloging of all music materials and formats
  • Gather and report research & instruction assessment data as well as other key library metrics as part of a centralized assessment program Work closely with other library departments for appropriate acquisitions, cataloging, and maintenance of music materials
  • Work closely with other library staff in support of research and instruction processes and practice
  • Participate in professional development and scholarship
  • Participate on library teams and initiatives as appropriate
  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

  • Required: ALA-accredited MLS. Bachelor's degree or higher in music.
  • Strongly Preferred: Advanced degree in musicology, music theory or history, ethnomusicology, etc.
  • Required: Instructional experience, especially in higher education
  • Strongly Preferred: 3+ years' experience in an academic library or equivalent, preferably in a music library
  • Strongly Preferred: Proficiency in music cataloging techniques.
  • Preferred: Supervisory experience, particularly in the academic library environment
  • Preferred: Experience working with music faculty and students Preferred: Experience with copyright, music licensing, and intellectual property
  • Expertise in music research terminology, technique and notation, including fluency with print and digital resources specific to music libraries.
  • Engagement in the music library profession, and professional organizations.
  • Excellent administrative skills, and ability to work well with colleagues.
  • Excellent communication skills, and ability to work well with colleagues

The salary range for this full time exempt level position is $71,000-$77,000.
