Position Summary

The Department of Art + Design at Austin Peay State University is seeking applications for a Gallery Director to join our vibrant, student-centered department. The Gallery Director is responsible for the programming and day-to-day operations of The New Gallery operated by the Department. We host nationally and internationally recognized artists for exhibitions, lectures, workshops, class visits, and studio visits with students. We are seeking a director who will program exhibitions that inspire, connecting our students to their courses, and engaging them in critical thought and reflection.

The Gallery Director chairs the departmental speakers committee which brings in 6-8 visiting artists per academic year. These responsibilities overlap with similar tasks related to hosting exhibiting artists in the gallery.

The Gallery Director is also responsible for management the APSU Permanent Art Collection, a 3500+ piece collection that is showcased across campus. They are responsible for the accessibility of the collection for research, for learning, and as enrichment for campus and the surrounding community.

Our department is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design and offers BFA and BA degrees with concentrations in Studio Art, Animation and Visual Effects, Graphic Design, Art History, and Art Education. The Department celebrates the mission of teaching and innovation, serving 350+ undergraduate majors. We aspire to provide an accepting environment that empowers students to ask questions, think critically, take risks, and develop intellectual and creative curiosity.

Austin Peay State University is a four-year public university, and the home of the Center of Excellence for the Creative Arts. The University has an enrollment of over 10,000 students and is located in Clarksville, Tennessee, a community of 180,000 people approximately 40 miles northwest of Nashville, TN.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

• Facilitate all aspects of the exhibition programing in The New Gallery
• Coordinate programming to serve the curricular goals and mission of the Department
• Promote the programs in The New Gallery, the Visiting Artists, and other public art and community programs
• Manage all components of the University 3,500-piece APSU Permanent Art Collection
• Supervise and mentor student workers
• Chair the departmental speakers committee and coordinate the visiting artists and speakers
• Manage yearly budgets in consultation with the Chair of the Department of Art + Design
• Collaborate with the Director of the Center of Excellence for Creative Arts
• Work with University and local community stakeholders to foster public engagement

• Ability to manage budgets and inventories
• Ability to work independently and troubleshoot problems with minimal supervision
• Demonstrated leadership, project management, and event-planning skills
• Proficiency in utilizing online database systems for art inventory

Required Minimum Qualifications

• Master's Degree in Art History, Museum Studies, Curatorial Studies, Studio Art or an equivalent related degree
• Experience working in a gallery or museum setting
• Experience managing volunteers and/or interns
• Art handling and inventory experience
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• A background check will be required for the successful applicant
