Under supervision of the Theatre Department Chair, College of the Canyons is seeking a skilled and safety-conscious part-time, short-term Theatre Production Assistant with experience in the scenic industry. The Theatre Production Assistant will be responsible for constructing, fabricating, and installing various structures and set pieces according to precise specifications.

Example of Duties

Job Responsibilities (include, but are not limited to):

  • Provide support with production elements for theatre department productions, including props, scenic elements, sound, lighting, publicity and marketing distribution, special events, fundraisers, and general organizational tasks.
  • Assist with the construction and coordination of scenic elements, including measuring, cutting, and assembling wood and other materials to create required designs.
  • Prepare and paint scenic flats and elements, including basic scenic painting.
  • Build, modify, and coordinate props as needed for productions.
  • Support lighting operations, including load-in, focusing, load-out, and restoring lighting plots.
  • Assist with scenic, lighting, and audio load-ins, strikes, and load-outs.
  • Construct scenery and props under the supervision of the Production & Technical Director.
  • Maintain a safe and organized work environment.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Minimum Requirements

Minimum Requirements:

Experience:

Experience with shop tools: saws, tables saws, drills, measuring, cutting, and assembling scenic elements.

Education:

Bachelor’s degree in Theatre or Technical Theatre and two years' experience in the construction of scenery for live theatre. or Associate’s degree in Theatre or Technical Theatre and three years’ experience in the construction of scenery for live theatre.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Ability to accurately read and interpret floor plans and scenic drawings.
  • Experience working safely and effectively with shop tools and power tools.
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills.
  • Ability to perform effectively under pressure and in fast-paced or high-stress situations.
  • Broad knowledge of, or experience with, technical theatre areas such as lighting, sound, or costumes.
  • Capacity to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Previous experience in an educational setting, either as a student or employee, is preferred.

Physical Demands:

The physical demands for this position include the ability to lift and stack objects up to 100 pounds occasionally and frequently exert 10 to 25 pounds of force to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects. Work involves walking, standing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, twisting/turning and reaching in awkward positions; bending at the waist. Work involves sitting plus frequent periods of standing and walking, which may include climbing staircases, and may include climbing ladders and stairs. Hand and digit dexterity to operate tools and equipment specific to the trade. Utilize near and far vision and depth perception. Hearing and speech to communicate and provide information to others. Must be able to perceive the nature of sound, utilize near and far vision, depth perception, provide oral information, and possess the manual dexterity to operate computers and related equipment. Handle and work with various materials and objects which are essential aspects of this position.

Conditions of Employment:

Successful completion of background fingerprint clearance, pre-employment physical examination (disabilities not related to the physical job will not affect the application process) and TB screening.

Proof of eligibility to work in the United States and signing of loyalty oath per government codes 3100-3109.

Meeting applicable eligibility requirements under CalPERS or CalSTRS if you are a current or former member.

Board of Trustees approval.

Available from 8:00 am to 4:30 pm, Monday through Friday. Some additional hours, evenings, or weekends may be required on a flexible basis during the week.
