Instrumentation Internship
Position Summary
The Career Services Department is recruiting for part time student interns. This 12-week Instrumentation Internship at Seadrift Coke is part of the Texas Internship Initiative Grant, offered in partnership with Workforce Solutions Golden Crescent and Victoria College. Designed for students in their final semester of the Electronics & Instrumentation Technology Program, this opportunity provides hands-on industry experience with a leading regional employer. Interns will work 8–12 hours per week, depending on placement needs.
To participate, students must meet the Texas Internship Initiative Grant eligibility criteria. Selected interns will receive a stipend from Victoria College to support transportation, childcare, and tuition/fees during the internship period. This experience offers a valuable opportunity to apply classroom learning in a real-world environment while building industry connections and career readiness.
Duties & Responsibilities
Duties include, but are not limited to the following:
- Assist in the installation, calibration, and maintenance of instrumentation and control systems, including sensors, transmitters, and programmable logic controllers (PLCs).
- Support troubleshooting and repair of process control equipment to ensure optimal operation.
- Collaborate with senior technicians to perform preventive maintenance tasks.
- Utilize diagnostic tools such as multimeters, oscilloscopes, and loop calibrators under supervision.
- Document maintenance activities, calibration records, and system modifications accurately.
- Participate in safety training and adhere to all safety protocols and procedures.
- Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
INTERN LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
- Apply theoretical knowledge of instrumentation learning in the classroom to the real world.
- Develop proficiency in using diagnostic and calibration tools.
- Gain insight into the operation and maintenance of industrial control systems.
- Understand the importance of safety and compliance.
- Build professional relationships within the industry.
Qualifications
- Educational requirements: Currently enrolled in the final semester of the Instrumentation & Electronics Technology Program at Victoria College. This may include the Level 1 Certificate or Associate of Applied Science;
- Basic understanding of industrial control systems including PLCs and DCS;
- Ability to interpret technical diagrams and schematics;
- Excellent ability to work as part of a team;
- Ability to use basic hand and power tools and computer systems;
- Ability to operate with flexible deadlines and schedule;
- Valid drivers license and reliable transportation.
GRANT ELIGIBILITY:
To qualify for this grant funded internship opportunity, students must be able to provide the following upon request. This information will be requested when necessary and is not required to complete the online application;
- Proof of income threshold by submitting a 1040 form;
- For male applicants, verification of Selective Service registration.
Physical Demands
The intern must be able to perform physical activities typical of an industrial environment, including standing, walking, bending, and climbing for extended periods. The role may require lifting and moving items up to 50 pounds and working in varying environmental conditions such as heat, cold, noise, and confined spaces. Interns must have the dexterity to operate tools and equipment, the ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE), and the capacity to see, hear, and respond quickly to alarms and operational signals.
