The International Student Programs & Support Advisor will be responsible for developing and overseeing support services, resources, and programming for international students on campus. This role will make sure that international students feel welcome, valued, and supported during their academic and personal journey.
In addition, the position will be responsible for assisting in coordinating the TRUSelf program. The advisor will collaborate with campus partners, advocate for student needs, and provide guidance on cultural acclimation, academic success, and general immigration-related matters.
This position requires strong problem-solving skills, teamwork, and the ability to work evenings and weekends as necessary to serve student needs and events.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Provide advice on academic success and cultural adaptation for international student needs.
- Develop and coordinate programs to foster a sense of belonging that include orientation, workshops, classes, mentorship programs, and social events.
- Connect students to campus and community resources, including academic services, health care, and career services.
- Master and educate surface immigration policies (e.g., visa requirements and work authorization) while referring detailed scenarios to the campus DSO.
- Work closely with offices such as Admission, Academic Affairs, Residence Life, and Student Life to make the international student experience more effective and efficient.
- Serve as an official point of contact for international students to provide them with timely, direct, and empathetic information.
- Develop orientation materials and processes for new international students
- Advocate for the needs of international students
- Collaborate across campus to integrate international students into the Truman community
- Teach a one-credit block course, “Strategies for International Student Success”
- Collaborate with Admission to create communication campaigns to advertise the TRUSelf program to prospective students.
- Develop and oversee TRUSelf programming, including workshops, mentorship, and discussions that support identity development and belonging.
- Recruit, train, and manage TRUSelf mentors, ensuring they are equipped to support and guide participants effectively.
- Collaborate with campus partners to ensure TRUSelf is inclusive and accessible to diverse student populations, including international students.
Skills & Abilities:
- Strong problem-solving and critical-thinking skills.
- Ability to learn and explain basic immigration policies.
- Strong interpersonal, cross-cultural communication, and advocacy skills.
- Experience working collaboratively within a team and across departments.
- Event planning and program development experience.
- Flexibility to work varying shifts, including some weekends and evenings.
- Excellent organizational skills with attention to detail.
- Familiarity with platforms and tools for online engagement (e.g., Zoom, Canva, WordPress)
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree
- 1-3 years of experience working with international students, student support services, or intercultural programming, preferably in a higher education setting.
Preferred qualifications:
- Master’s degree in Higher Education, International Education, Student Affairs, Intercultural Studies, or related field
- Comfort and experience facilitating workshops, student retreats, or intercultural dialogue sessions.
- Direct experience supporting students across various identities, cultures, socioeconomic, immigration, and linguistic backgrounds.
