Johnson Family Chair in Water Resources and Watershed Ecology (Tenured)

Job Details

Posting Summary

The School of Environmental and Biological Sciences (SEBS) and the Department of Ecology, Evolution, and Natural Resources at Rutgers University-New Brunswick invite applications for the Johnson Family Chair in Water Resources and Watershed Ecology. This is a tenured faculty position at the rank of full professor. The Johnson Chair will lead a forward-looking research program focused on the relationship between natural salt- and freshwater-based ecosystems and the influence of human activities in the Raritan River drainage basin and its estuary. The Chair includes research support for an initial five-year term, with the possibility of renewal at the discretion of the Executive Dean of the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences.

We seek an individual who will lead research, teaching, and outreach efforts in the aquatic sciences, applying research findings to address challenges in conserving, restoring, or managing aquatic ecosystems, exemplified by the Raritan River and Bay.

The successful candidate will have an international reputation for collaborative research in the aquatic sciences and a proven ability to develop, manage, and sustain a competitive, funded research program. Areas of expertise may include the restoration of rivers and estuaries, fisheries management, ecosystem dynamics, the impacts of urbanization on aquatic ecosystems, watershed management, and ecological connections across the land-water interface.

The holder of the Johnson Chair will be expected to translate scientific insights into effective policy and management. Success requires a multidisciplinary and collaborative approach that builds bridges with allied departments in SEBS (e.g., Marine and Coastal Sciences, Environmental Sciences, Human Ecology, Landscape Architecture), as well as across Rutgers-New Brunswick Schools (e.g., Edward J. Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy, School of Arts and Sciences, Mason Gross School of the Arts, to name a few).

Rutgers-New Brunswick, and SEBS in particular, values the importance of applied learning as a key component of student success. The successful candidate will demonstrate experience in engaging students in experiential learning. This includes teaching, mentoring, and advising undergraduate and graduate students. The Chair will have access to multiple resources on and near campus to support this work, including the EcoPreserve (https://ecopreserve.rutgers.edu/), Rutgers Gardens (https://rutgersgardens.rutgers.edu/), the Rutgers Class of 1914 Boathouse and dock (https://www.rucrew.com/facilities), and a vessel capable of taking up to 20 students on the Raritan River (https://marine.rutgers.edu/about-us/facilities/r-v-rutgers/).

A commitment to engagement with the public and interested stakeholders is expected. As part of the land grant mission, SEBS is closely aligned with the New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station and Rutgers Cooperative Extension. Outreach and extension are fundamental to our academic mission. The Chair has opportunities to engage with extension faculty and staff to collaborate with programs such as Environmental Stewards (https://envirostewards.rutgers.edu/), Master Gardeners (https://extension.rutgers.edu/master-gardeners), Water Resource Program, New Jersey Water Resource Institute (https://njwrri.rutgers.edu/), (http://water.rutgers.edu/), and 4H Youth Development (https://nj4h.rutgers.edu/).

Compensation Information

The final salary offer may be determined by several factors, including, but not limited to, the candidate’s qualifications, experience, and expertise, and availability of department or grant funds to support the position. We also take into consideration market benchmarks, if and when appropriate, and internal equity to ensure fair compensation relative to the university’s broader compensation structure. We are committed to offering competitive and flexible compensation packages to attract and retain top talent.
