PART-TIME COORDINATOR / HUMAN ANATOMY LAB / COLLEGE OF HEALTH PROFESSIONS
Position Summary
The Human Anatomy Laboratory Coordinator in the School of Health Sciences is responsible for the day-to-day operations, body procurement, security, and safety of the human anatomy laboratory for the College of Health Professions in support of the Anatomy Director. This position is tasked with ensuring an effective and safe laboratory environment.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelors degree, preferably in anatomy, biology, anthropology, physiology, or a related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience that equates to four years.
- Three years of experience related to cadaver laboratory management or a combination of one year of direct cadaver experience and a Masters degree in a related field.
- Excellent organizational skills and ability to multi-task and set priorities.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills with an emphasis on customer service.
- Demonstrated high professional and ethical standards.
- Ability to perform the essential functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation.
Preferred Qualifications
- Masters Degree.
- Experience supervising students.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Works with the human anatomy course instructor(s) on the ordering, delivery, and return of cadaver specimens used in all human anatomy courses.
- Provides direct care of the cadaver specimens such as proper preservation, maintenance, ensuring proper moisture, and care management.
- Ensures health and safety protocols are routinely followed and updated in consultation with the Office of Laboratory Field and Safety (OLFS).
- Coordinates with OLFS staff to ensure regular air quality inspections/testing takes place in the human anatomy lab.
- Works with human anatomy course instructor(s) and OLFS to implement protocols of off-gassing, and ventilation to maintain air quality.
- Guides graduate students and student teaching assistants on daily cleaning requirements as well as proper maintenance of cadavers and acquisition of human anatomy models.
- Coordinates with custodial staff for general human anatomy lab cleaning (e.g., floors/ air vents, etc.).
- Coordinates and directs dissections of human specimens by graduate assistants and student teaching assistants.
- Works with Facilities Management (FM) to coordinate increasing human anatomy lab air flow when cadaver specimens are present.
- Carries out other duties and responsibilities as directed by the human anatomy course instructor(s) or faculty-appointed department director.
- Lab Safety, Maintenance, & Training: Posts and enforces human anatomy lab safety rules. Works with human anatomy course instructor(s) and the faculty-appointed department director to develop general lab policies and help disseminate information to faculty, staff, students, and others as appropriate. Maintains an up-to-date, comprehensive inventory (i.e., equipment, models, technology/dissection tools) for the human anatomy lab. Ensures that lab supplies (i.e. gloves, fluids, paper towels, etc.) are ordered and stocked regularly. Coordinates the proper removal of hazardous wastes when necessary. Ensures that regularly used laboratory equipment and human anatomical models are in good working order. Coordinates the annual department equipment inventory report as well as the chemical inventory of the human anatomy lab. Works with the human anatomy course instructor(s) to ensure laboratory safety training requirements and refresher courses are complete in accordance with the OLFS guidelines, such as blood-borne pathogens, PPE use, hazardous waste, etc.
- Lab Security & Access: Coordinates with building security personnel to ensure the human anatomy lab is open when classes are scheduled and supervised during open lab hours, and locked when they are not. Controls internal lab door key codes for the human anatomy lab. Coordinates with the human anatomy course instructor(s) on when to use the lab for student groups outside scheduled classes. Schedules and plans coverage of open lab hours in consultation with the human anatomy course instructor(s). Serves as the emergency contact for the human anatomy lab.
